Mars seismometer

Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research

Description

The Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research (MPS) in Katlenburg-Lindau, Germany, (http://www.mps.mpg.de) wants to hire for an initial period of three years an experienced Seismologist as project scientist for a contribution to a seismometer experiment on Mars. The MPS is in charge for the development of the deployment and leveling system for a broadband seismometer, which will be carried by the NASA mission INSIGHT to the surface of Mars. The planned launch date is in March 2016 and the seismometer is expected to deliver data from October 2016 to at least August 2018.

Sentinel 5 - Payload analysis

Description

 

SRON is considered to be a global leader in the area of earth and space science, due to the space instruments it develops for the satellites of ESA, NASA and JAXA. The EPS (Earth and Planetary Science) division has a vacancy for a Scientist (PostDoc) (number SRON 12-18). ESA is developing five new missions called Sentinels specifically for the operational needs of the GMES program. As part of this program the Sentinel-5 mission is dedicated to monitoring the composition of the atmosphere. Its payload measures the sunlight reflected by the Earth atmosphere in several spectral ranges including the shortwave infrared (SWIR) which is dedicated to determine the atmospheric abundance of Carbon monoxide (CO) and methane (CH4) with high accuracy. Both trace gases are important atmospheric constituents and measurements of their global distribution are needed to improve our understanding of atmospheric chemistry and global warming. For an optimal performance of the SWIR measurements within the financial budget of the mission a dedicated analysis of different instrument concepts is required, which will be performed in close collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA). For this purpose we are looking for a scientist with strong numerical experience who is capable to work in an international team.

Post-doc wanted to work within the CRONOS project (http://www.cronostheory.eu), in collaboration with Alberto Castro. CRONOS is a large European project, sponsored by the EU-FP7, aiming at constructing a quantitative theory for charge and spin-dynamics in real materials, with applications in the areas of solar energy and magnetic recording. The main theoretical tool for the project will be time-dependent density functional theory, in particular in the spirit of real time simulations. The consortium aims at both developing fundamental theoretical aspects and applying such development to real charge and spin dynamics problems.

Se valorará la posesión de alguna experiencia en modelización de procesos y la pericia en el laboratorio. Imprescindible poseer una fuerte vocación de investigador/a.

PhD - Solid state physics

There are 2 open PhD positions in the Theoretical Solid-State Physics group of the Physics and Material Sciences Research Unit at the University of Luxembourg. You will work in an exciting international environment and participate in the development of a young, research-oriented university, established in 2003, that has been successfully expanding in recent years. In the group we use firstprinciples methods to understand and predict the properties of novel functional materials starting from the electronic phenomena at the atomic scale. The work will be performed under the supervision of Prof. Ludger Wirtz in collaboration with experimental and other theoretical groups in Europe.

The topic of the first position is the calculation of luminescence spectra of semiconductors and insulators in the presence of defects. The work involves the use and development of the methods of many-body perturbation theory in solid-state physics. In parallel, the use of quantum-chemistry (wavefunction) methods in connection with the development of smart embedding schemes can be envisaged. The work will be in collaboration with the Laboratory for Photovoltaics (Prof. S. Siebentritt) at the University of Luxembourg.

PhD - Electrónica espacial

El grupo de investigación posee una experiencia de varios años en el campo de la microelectrónica aplicada al sector Espacial. La línea de trabajo consiste en estudiar y mejorar la fiabilidad de los componentes electrónicos (circuitos, memorias y procesadores) embarcados en aplicaciones espaciales, y que están sometidos a fuentes de radiación, siguiendo las líneas estratégicas marcadas por la Agencia Espacial Europea. Actualmente el equipo está iniciando una colaboración con el Grupo de Sistemas Robustos de la Universidad de Stanford con el fin de encontrar soluciones eficientes para incrementar la tolerancia a fallos en circuitos digitales, manteniendo su rendimiento y área en los límites deseados.

 

 Características:

- Se ofrece modalidad de trabajo a tiempo completo a través de una beca pre-doctoral, o bien modalidad de colaboración a tiempo parcial compatible con otro trabajo (en este caso se requiere una dedicación semanal mínima).

PhD - Biophysical Chemistry / Soft Matter Physics

Description

 

CIC biomaGUNE is a young and dynamic center for research on biomaterials at the highest level, which offers excellent working conditions and is well equipped with state-of-the-art instrumentation and facilities. In this project, the PhD fellow will create and characterize model systems of the nuclear pore permeability barrier using biochemical, surface science and soft matter physics methods, to better understand how macromolecules are selectively shuttled into and out of the nucleus of living cells. The nuclear pore complex (NPC) is the gateway for the transport of DNA, proteins and other macromolecules between the nucleus and the cytosol of living cells. Selective transport is afforded by a network of specialized polymers (FG-nucleoporins) that fill the 40 nm wide NPC channel. To understand how selective transport in this natural nanoscale sorting device is regulated, nanoscale model systems will be developed, in which FG-nucleoporins are re-assembled on surfaces and in artificial pores. The successful candidate will be given the opportunity to explore different methodological approaches including modern methods of surface functionalization, techniques for the nanoscale characterization of self-assembled soft matter systems (incl. QCM-D, ellipsometry, atomic force microscopy and fluorescence microscopy) and theoretical approaches for rationalizing their behavior. The results of this study may in the future be useful for the development of smart filtering devices or for biotechnological applications such as gene delivery. The PhD project is part of a broader effort in the Richter Group, funded through an ERC Starting Grant, to understand and exploit the working principles of biomolecular hydrogels. The research team is multidisciplinary. The Richter Group combines novel approaches of surface biofunctionalization and a toolbox of state-of-the-art analytical techniques to create biomimetic supramolecular architectures, for the study of fundamental biological questions and for biotechnological applications.

Unidad de Control para el instrumento EPD de Solar Orbiter

Integración de energías renovables en redes de distribución inteligentes

Se necesita Doctor Ingeniero Industrial, especialidad eléctrica, o equivalente, para coordinar todas las tareas de investigación dentro del Proyecto Europeo SINGULAR (Smart and Sustainable Insular Electricity Grids Under Large-Scale Renewable Integration). El tema es la integración de energías renovables en redes de distribución inteligentes (smart grids). El coordinador tendrá como misión la coordinación y el seguimiento del proyecto así como la supervisión de los becarios de investigación asociados al mismo. Es necesario tener amplios conocimientos de sistemas de energía eléctrica, mercados eléctricos, optimización y microeconomía. Se valorará tener familiaridad con los entornos de optimización GAMS y MATLAB.

Under the Severo Ochoa programme, the BSC will carry out multidisciplinary research to address the complex challenges in the path towards Exascale computing, co-developing energy efficient and high performance hardware and software platforms with applications in personalised medicine, modelling of human organs, and global models for climate change and air quality prediction. Within this context the Junior researcher will support scientific development of the NMMB/BSC-CTM multiscale model, with the aim to improve the understanding of the physico-chemical interaction processes that directly impacts on weather, air quality and climate through numerical modelling techniques.
