En el marco de la participación del Centro de Astrobiología en los proyectos instrumentales asociados al James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) y al European Extremely Large Telescope (EELT), se ofrecen tres contratos.

CONTRATO JWST / MIRI

MIRI es uno de los cuatro instrumentos del JWST y está diseñado para operar en el rango de 5 a 28 micras como cámara y espectrógrafo de campo integral. MIRI es un instrumento desarrollado por un consorcio de institutos europeos e instituciones americanas y en el que participa el CAB como IP español.

ACTIVIDADES A DESARROLLAR

- Participación en el grupo de software

- Desarrollo de herramientas post-calibración para el análisis de datos (IFS, long-slit)

- Desarrollo de simulaciones asociadas al modo IFS y/o long-slit de para el estudio de galaxias a distancias cosmológicas

- Participación en los proyectos de investigación del grupo en el ámbito de las galaxias con formación estelar intensa utilizando instrumentos en el rango infrarrojo (SINFONI/VLT, CanariCam/GTC) o milimétrico (IRAM, ALMA).

- Desarrollo de proyectos de investigación propios

Support Astronomer

The Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC, Tenerife, Spain) invites applications for ONE post-doctoral support astronomer (SA) position. The SA Group, under the direct supervision of Dr. Alejandro Oscoz, provides support at several IAC’s telescopes, instruments and experiments, including the IAC’s common user instruments at both, OT and ORM, Observatories, such as LIRIS, INTEGRAL or GHaFaS for the WHT, TIP-II for GREGOR, etc. The SA spend about 8 days per month at the Observatories and the rest of their time at the IAC´s headquarters in La Laguna devoted to support tasks. Up to 30% of their time may be dedicated to personal research.

Duties:

• Maintaining and tending the quality of the IAC’s Telescopes, Instruments and Experiments at the Canary Islands Observatories.

• Development software to control these instruments, as well as accurate and friendly software for the reduction of the obtained data.

• Carrying out the IAC’s Service Nights granted by the Spanish Time Allocation Committee in both the ORM and the OT.

• Providing support to astronomers using the IAC’s Telescopes, Instruments and Experiments at the Canary Islands Observatories.

• Collaborate with the Sky Quality Group in taking, reducing and analysing the data obtained with the different instruments.

• Calibration of the instruments’ performance during the observation of different objects.

• Observation of standard calibration stars.

• Writing of the user’s manuals, for both non-experienced and experienced users.

• Proposal, development and commissioning of improvements in the instrumentation.

Duration:

The contract will start as soon as possible after the publication of the Resolution by the Director IAC, during the fourth trimester 2012 or the first trimester 2013, with a lasting period of three years, subject to annual review. The gross annual salary is 32.866 € per annum.

PostDoc - Mid and Far Infrared exploitation

The Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC, Tenerife, Spain) invites applications for one post-doctoral position in Astrophysics to work with Dr. Ismael Pérez Fournon (ipf@iac.es) within the framework of the project "SPANISH CONTRIBUTION TO SPACE MISSIONS IN THE MID- AND FAR-IR AND MULTI-RANGE SCIENTIFIC EXPLOITATION" (AYA2010-21697-C05-04). The IAC Herschel-SPIRE group participates in the consortium which has built the SPIRE instrument of Herschel Space Observatory and in several Herschel extragalactic surveys (HerMES and H-ATLAS, among others) as well as in other large extragalactic surveys (Spitzer SWIRE and SERVS, COSMOS, SDSS-III, and VISTA-VHS) and the ground-based follow-up of high-redshift infrared galaxies with GTC, the IRAM radio telescopes, and other large telescopes.

The main purpose of the position is to work as postdoctoral researcher in the scientific exploitation of Herschel extragalactic surveys and in the analysis of complementary data obtained with the 10.4-m GTC and other large telescopes. The successful candidate will become part of the Herschel-SPIRE Instrument Control Centre (ICC) team and participate in its activities (instrument operations, SPIRE instrument health monitoring, planning and analysing calibration and engineering observations). The candidate will develop part of the tasks at the Instrument Control Centre of the SPIRE instrument located at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (UK) during periods of several weeks and will also participate in the scientific exploitation of the extragalactic surveys of Herschel and in the analysis of complementary data obtained with the GTC telescope and other large telescopes.

Operaciones científicas del satélite Planck

Description:

Instrument Operations Engineer/Scientist, Planck Science Office, based at European Space Astronomy Centre, Madrid, Spain. For our activities in the European Space Agency, we are looking for an Engineer/Scientist with a PhD in astronomy to support the Planck Science Office. The main tasks of the Planck Science Office (PSO) are:

Detailed specification (in collaboration with the DPCs and the Planck Science Team) of the data products to be generated from the mission

Monitoring of the proper implementation of the data reduction activities carried out at the DPCs. In particular verification that the level of coordination between the two DPCs is sufficient to guarantee an integrated final set of data products.

Full responsibility in the requirement specification and implementation follow-up of the Planck Legacy Archive (PLA)

Release of the PLA to the Scientific Community and provision of Help-Desk services

Operaciones científicas de Gaia

Objective:

An exciting opportunity to work at ESAC, supporting, maintaining and testing systems for the Gaia mission.

Service tasks include:

Further test and scale SOC products such as MDB

Participate in the optimisation of software processing

Gather operational constraints for software running at SOC

Contribute to procedure writing and the implementation of those procedures

Assist in automation of SOC procedures (nominally Gaia SOC will only be manned normal working hours)

Proactively fix issues as they arise (requires Java knowledge)

Interact appropriately with and support the algorithm providers

Contribute to the maintenance of the overall system, including configuration control and versioning

Provide support for testing, particularly for End-to-End (E2E) and operational rehearsal campaigns

Finally support and maintain the system into operations (2013-2018)

The selected person must be willing to work in a team environment and to travel

Qualifications / Experience:

University degree or equivalent in computer science or related fields

Basic educational or work-acquired knowledge of astronomy/physics and standard numerical methods and techniques would be a strong asset

Scientific background is a strong advantage

The candidate should have a good grasp of ECSS standards and be aware of required documentation for a large project

PostDoc - Búsqueda y caracterización de exo-Tierras

El IAC (Tenerife), centro de investigación astrofísica puntera en España, anuncia UN contrato post-doctoral en el marco del proyecto "LA BUSQUEDA Y CARACTERIZACIÓN DE EXO-TIERRAS: PARTICIPACIÓN EN EL DESARROLLO DEL ESPECTRÓGRAFO ESPRESSO PARA LOS VLT" (P/301139), y cuyo IP es el Prof. Rafael Rebolo.

Tareas a realizar:

Caracterización de estrellas con planetas: determinación de parámetros estelares, temperatura efectiva, gravedad, composición química atmosférica  actividad cromosférica. Obtención de curvas de velocidad radial que permitan la identificación o confirmación de la existencia de planetas alrededor de estrellas. Utilización de los espectrógrafos  HARPS-North y South en el observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos, La Palma y en el observatorio de la Silla (Chille). Determinación de parámetros orbitales.

Se valorara especialmente:

La experiencia en el análisis de datos de espectrógrafos de alto poder resolutivo, en la obtención de curvas de velocidad radial y la motivación para el desempeño de las tareas inherentes al puesto al que opta. Las contribuciones científico-técnicas a su campo de investigación.

PostDoc - Cherenkov Telescope Array

Contrato post-doctoral en el marco del proyecto: "CHERENKOV TELESCOPE ARRAY - CTA" (3E1302), cuyo IP es el Dr. Ramón García López.

Tareas:

La persona que ocupe la plaza deberá responsabilizarse de las siguientes tareas, a realizar en el grupo de Astrofísica de Partículas del IAC y en colaboración con el Consorcio CTA-España:

• Coordinar los estudios técnicos necesarios para apoyar la candidatura de España para albergar el observatorio Norte del Cherenkov Array Telescope (CTA- Norte) en Tenerife.
• Apoyar y complementar los estudios de impacto ambiental y socio-económico relacionados con dicha candidatura.
• Apoyar las acciones que CTA-España realice en relación a dicha candidatura.
• Realizar las labores de divulgación que promuevan el apoyo social a la candidatura, tanto en relación a la Ciencia que se llevará a acabo con CTA como en relación al impacto que CTA-Norte tendrá en la sociedad.

Se valorará la experiencia en proyectos relacionados con la promoción de observatorios terrestres de rayos gamma y en estudios relacionados con la calidad de dichos observatorios, además de la experiencia en la gestión de proyectos relacionados con los rayos gamma.
