PhD - High performance in-memory databases

Barcelona Supercomputing Center
Barcelona, Spain

Description

BSC under the collaboration agreement with IBM are conducting research and development projects around the Technology Center for Supercomputing for providing education for new professionals and for developing common communication, commercial initiatives and marketing partnership in order to create market interest in IBM and BSC technologies. The Autonomic Systems and eBusiness Platforms research group is looking for a PhD Student to collaborate with research project related with IBM. The project aims to explore the use of high performance in-memory (some combination of DRAM and/or storage class memory such as flash) databases. Active Storage could dramatically change the way that Supercomputing, BioInformatics research centers and Cloud Providers manage data in the BioInformatics domain, eliminating the bottleneck created by the use flat files to store data and making data pipelining easier; and in the Data Analytics domain, introducing scalable active data repositories accessible locally or remotely. In both cases, new algorithms and approaches to large-scale data management problems will be studied and proposed based on the large all-to-all bandwidth (and corresponding bandwidth to local solid-state storage) available in existing prototypes combined with a very large in-memory storage capacity. Candidates must be interested in starting a research career and pursuing a PhD degree in the scope of an international team. Main responsibilities:

- Support to the development of the project
- Identify suitable workloads for use on BGAS platform
- Study the opportunities to perform data-prefetching and data-driven workflow orchestration on the selected workloads
- Test the functional correctness of the workflows ported on a BGAS prototype
- Test the scalability of the workflows ported on a BGAS prototype

PhD - Software Defined Environments

Barcelona Supercomputing Center
Barcelona, Spain

Description

BSC under the collaboration agreement with IBM are conducting research and development projects around the Technology Center for Supercomputing for providing education for new professionals and for developing common communication, commercial initiatives and marketing partnership in order to create market interest in IBM and BSC technologies. The Autonomic Systems and eBusiness Platforms research group is looking for a PhD Student to collaborate with research project related with IBM. The project will explore the applicability of the so-called "Software Defined Environments (SDE)" to HPC workloads as it has been previously done with transactional and data analytics workloads. Workloads will be described in a declarative way to capture their requirements and resource abstractions and management technologies will be developed to enable such workloads to be deployed and optimized in an SDE cloud environment. The need for SDEs is justified by the fact that the use of special hardware (e.g. FPGAs, and GPUs) and fast network interconnects is more and more common in all kinds of workloads, either HPC or not traditionally considered HPC. So a related angle of exploration is how HPC technologies can impact modern workloads, and how HPC architectures can be made available to these workloads in the context of SDEs. Candidates must be interested in starting a research career and pursuing a PhD degree in the scope of an international team. Main responsibilities:

- Support to the development of the project
- Identify suitable workloads for use on SDEs
- Extend IaaS platforms (mostly OpenStack) to deal with HPC workloads
- Define SDEs to descrine HPC workloads running on heterogeneous clouds
- Test and verify the correctness of SDEs both analytically and empirically (after deploying the workloads on SDE)

PhD - Audio Signal Processing

Music Technology Group - Universitat Pompeu Fabra
Barcelona, Spain

Description

The topic for this PhD position is “Source Separation and Signal Modelling of Orchestral Music Mixtures”. This position is funded by the PHENICX project and the starting date is October 2013. Musical Audio Source Separation relates to advanced signal processing methods that allow extracting a given instrument (sound source) from the original recording. In this case, we will focus on classical music recordings that can come in various formats (e.g, stereo catalogue tracks, multi-track on-stage orchestral recordings). The goals shall cover here both score-informed situations, e.g. supported by score-alignment, and blind situations where the score is not available. The project involves collaborating with other researchers at the MTG in the areas of Music Information Retrieval and Advanced Music Interaction, as well as with other international research partners in the PHENICX project. About PHENICX:

Modern digital multimedia and internet technology have radically changed the ways people find entertainment and discover new interests online, seemingly without any physical or social barriers. Such new access paradigms are in sharp contrast with the traditional means of entertainment. An illustrative example of this is live music concert performances that are largely being attended by dedicated audiences only. The PHENICX project aims at bridging the gap between the online and offline entertainment worlds. It will make use of the state-of-the-art digital multimedia and internet technology to make the traditional concert experiences rich and universally accessible: concerts will become multimodal, multi-perspective and multilayer digital artefacts that can be easily explored, customized, personalized, (re)enjoyed and shared among the users. The main goal is twofold: (a) to make live concerts appealing to potential new audience and (b) to maximize the quality of concert experience for everyone. Scientific objectives of PHENICX are (i) to generate a reliable and effective set of techniques for multimodal enrichment of live music concert recordings suitable for implementation and deployment in real-world situations, and (ii) finding ways to offer the resulting multi-faceted digital artefacts as engaging digital experiences to a wide range of users. The project will establish a methodological framework to map these scientific objectives onto a solid implementation platform that will be developed incrementally and tested in real-life use settings. PHENICX will mainly focus on classical music - a European heritage asset that suffers heavily from an image of inaccessibility to outsider audiences. However, findings from PHENICX will be relevant to live concert situations in any genre. With an innovative technology partner, as well as two authoritative professional music stakeholders in the consortium, the project has strong immediate impact and dissemination potential.

PhD - Photonics

Chalmers university of Technology
Gothenburg, Sweden

Description

The Photonics laboratory at the Microtechnology and Nanoscience Department (MC2) is a dynamic and creative group with about 30 members working in an international and collaborative atmosphere. We perform both curiosity-driven and applied-research in the areas of optoelectronics, nanophotonics, and fiber optic systems. We enjoy a state-of-the-art laboratory for fiber-optic communications and have access to in-house clean-room facilities to manufacture photonic devices engineered at the nanoscale. Part of our recent research efforts focus on Next-generation optical communication systems featuring ultra-fast data rates (>1 Tb/s); Optical fiber amplifiers with world-record noise figures (1 dB); and ultra-high-repetition-rate (>10 GHz) optical frequency comb technology.

An optical frequency comb is typically produced by an ultrashort laser pulse train, whose spectrum consists of a series of discrete equidistant lines spanning over a broad bandwidth. The outstanding phase-noise performance of optical frequency combs has revolutionized the fields of optical synthesis and metrology. The applications of this Nobel-Prize-winning technology range from optical clocks to the synthesis of ultra-pure microwave signals. This project deals with the development of emerging and compact optical frequency comb platforms delivering ultra-high-repetition rates (10-100 GHz) and the study of their suitability for applications in optical communication systems. We will study two main platforms, i.e., electro-optic frequency comb generators made of lithium niobate modulators, and integrated silicon nitride microring resonators. The work is 50% experimental and 40% numerical modeling. It involves testing of chip devices, development of electro-optic comb generators and realization of applications. You will also have room to contribute with your own ideas. The PhD student position is limited to 4 years. The majority of your working time is devoted to your own research project. In addition, the position will normally include 10% departmental work, mostly teaching duties.

PostDoc - Crisis management networks

La Salle - URL
Barcelona, Spain

Description

Research of NITIM is positioned at the interface of management, specifically entrepreneurship, innovation and technology management, computer science and information systems. Research focuses on studies of dynamic organizational and societal phenomena, such as innovation and change, from a network perspective. NITIM research is scientifically rigorous and practically relevant. Engaged scholarship as preferred methodological orientation builds on the cooperation of industrial and academic partners. The now open position is supported by Europe´s Marie Curie Program and will form a portfolio of related research projects from multiple disciplinary backgrounds on the phenomenon of “Crisis Management Networks”. Crisis Management Networks are formed to respond to crisis situation. They emerge and are reconfigured rapidly after a disaster, like Hurricane Katrina, a Tsunami, or a terror attack. With the rapidly growing number and increasing cost of worldwide disasters this phenomenon is practically relevant and calls for novel technological and managerial solutions. At the same time it is theoretically interesting and a benign object of study because of the scale, the impact and the dynamics of crises. Individual project will focus on "Modeling architectures for coordination and communication platforms"
