PostDoc - Nanophotonics for Solid-State Lighting

FOM Institute AMOLF performs leading fundamental research on physics of Biomolecular Systems and Nanophotonics; two areas with key potential for technological innovations. The Institute contributes to knowledge transfer to industry and society and trains talented young researchers. AMOLF is located at Science Park Amsterdam, The Netherlands, and engages approximately 140 scientists and 70 support staff.
These challenges will be addressed by studying the light-matter interaction in different types of nanostructures that can be integrated with LEDs, namely, metallic (plasmonic) metasurfaces and materials, photonic crystals, and hybrid metal-dielectric nanowires. By engineering the flow of light in these nanomaterials, and by achieving control over their optical density of states, it will become possible to modify and mold the emission characteristics and to improve the performance of white LEDs.
Seven PhD student or postdoc positions in the area of Nanophotonics are available to work in an Industrial Partnership programme between FOM Institute AMOLF and Philips Research. This programme aims at achieving fundamental knowledge required to develop efficient solid-state white light emitting devices (LEDs). It will focus on three technological challenges: spectral tuning of the emission, control of beam shape and optimization of the optical absorption in light-converting phosphor layers.

PhD - Illuminations Optics - Hamiltonian optics in phase space

Description

In nonimaging optics we study light transfer from a source to a target, to control or optimize photometric quantities like illuminous intensity or illuminance at the target. A well-known simulation method for this is the Monte Carlo ray tracing method. In this method, the propagation of randomly selected rays through an optical system, containing e.g. collimators and/or lenses, is computed. The propagation of a ray can be represented in a two- or four-dimensional phase space and can be interpreted as the flow of a Hamiltionian system. Thus, the map which transforms a source distribution to a target distribution is symplectic.
It is the goal of this project to apply this phase space analysis to optical systems in order to:
Have a better understanding of mixing of light and improve optical systems that mix light. In lighting applications several LEDs are used and in many cases these LEDs have different colors. It is necessary to mix the light of these LEDs to get a good uniform light pattern. Using phase space analysis it is possible to come up with new designs that result in improved mixing properties compared to designs we already know. This approach exploits tools developed in non-linear dynamics.
Create the optical systems that belong to optical mappings. Using optimal transport theory, we can create optical maps. Based on these optical maps we need to create optical systems that are the physical realisation. Phase space analysis and Hamiltonian descriptions can help us in reaching this goal.
Create new optical elements with an improved look and feel. Phase space analysis allows us to understand better how light is transported in an optical system. Based on this knowledge we can create new optical elements that have an improved look and feel and are potentially smaller.
This PhD research will be executed in close cooperation with the world leader in lighting: Philips Lighting. The project is embedded in a cluster of projects related to illumination optics and the candidate is expected to work closely with the other PhD students and to be present several days a week at Philips Lighting. This will allow the candidate to have a strong interaction with the engineers that will use the tools after the project has been finished.
As a PhD student your tasks are the following:
-Perform scientific research in the described domain;
-Present results at international conferences;
-Publish results in scientific journals;
-Participate in activities of the group and the department;
-Assist SC-staff in teaching undergraduate and graduate courses (at most 20%of the time).

Requirements

-An MSc in (applied) mathematics, physics or a related discipline with a strong background in computational physics;
-Experience with Matlab and preferably C or C++;

PostDoc - Biotechnology

Description

The position is part of an EU collaborative project, entitled Optimized esterase biocatalysts for cost-effective industrial production, in which new esterases for the production of anti-oxidants will be developed. The novel genes will be based on genome mining as well as gene engineering and will be expressed in available enzyme production hosts and the properties of the enzymes will be investigated. The postdoc will collaborate intensively with a bioinformatician and a PhD student at CBS as well as with several partners in the project. In addition, the postdoc will have as task the daily supervision of 1-2 PhD students.

Requirements

We are looking for candidates with a PhD in biotechnology or a related field. In depth experience with (fungal) gene expression and enzyme characterization is required. Experience with comparative genomics, protein modeling, phylogenetic analysis and site-directed mutagenesis is an advantage. PhD - Immunology & Genomics

In this EU sponsored project ABIRISK, the PhD student will use this technology to identify and characterize lymphocyte responses in patients with different diseases treated with biological therapies, e.g. in multiple sclerosis, inflammatory bowel disease and rheumatoid arthritis. To this end results from in vitro drug responses and in vivo receptor sequencing will be compared to identify responding B and T cells. These cells will be characterized using a reverse phenotyping and genomic approach. The goal is to gain more insight in the development of these antidrug responses, and to identify early predictors for side effects and response to biologicals. The PhD student will be embedded in an international research team of approximately 12 people, and will be supervised by Dr N de Vries.

Requirements

We are looking for an enthusiastic and ambitious candidate with a Master degree in Medicine, Cell Biology, Molecular Life Sciences, Biomedical Sciences, Biochemistry, or a related field.
- An interest and/or basic knowledge in molecular biology, cellular biology and cellular immunology will be an advantage.

PhD - Deploying Security Measures

The effects of terrorist and piracy activities, or generally speaking activities of intelligent opponents can have a large impact on the socio-economic and military well-fare. To counter these increasing, multiple threats, security measures/forces should be deployed to surveil and patrol assigned areas to protect valuable objects and critical infrastructure (e.g. harbours, airports, merchant ships and routes). However, current OR models do not always adequately take into account the complexity of these kind of military operations and the scarcity of resources. Therefore, we are facing the challenge to develop adequate models and methods for the assessment of deployment of scarce security forces in an efficient and effective way given multiple, responsive and adaptive threats, also taking into consideration new technological developments. The key challenge to be tackled in this PhD research is: How to optimally deploy security forces to protect critical infrastructures given limited resources and taking into account multiple adversaries and their intelligent responses?

PhD - Aqueous alteration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in asteroids and meteorites

We are currently seeking a highly motivated applicant for the following joint position at the Department of Earth Sciences, Utrecht University, and Leiden Observatory, Leiden University, the Netherlands:

4-year PhD project on aqueous alteration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in asteroids and meteorites 

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have been detected in a wide range of environments, starting from the interstellar medium (ISM) where they are formed in situ, to solar system objects, such as meteorites. However, the PAHS detected in the interstellar medium are much larger (up to C50 and C60) then the compounds found in meteorites. For at least two carbonaceous chondrites (Allende and Murchison) it has been suggested that the PAHs present in these meteorites predate their formation, so are likely to originate from the ISM. Very recently a survey was performed on what are the one hundred mineralogical questions impacting the future of Earth, planetary, and environmental sciences. One of the questions listed here was "What role, if any, have minerals played in the diversity of organic matter in carbonaceous asteroids?" Closely related to this question is the effect of water in this context. For example, it has been suggested that amino acids could be synthesized in carbonaceous chondrites by aqueous alteration of PAHs. Metasomatism, the chemical alteration of a rock by hydrothermal fluids is also suggested to play a large role in meteoritic alteration. This process is so far mainly studied in the context of the mineralogy of chondritic meteorites. However, this hydrothermal alteration could also significantly affect the PAH content of these chondrites. If we assume that indeed some of the PAH material found in meteorites originates from the ISM, then it is likely that the large C50, C60 compounds are incorporated in meteorites as well. These have, however, never been detected. This project focuses on the key question if aqueous alteration could be mechanism to break down the larger PAHs into smaller PAHs and other organic compounds that are detected in meteorites. The primary goal of this proposal - that comprises a 4-year PhD project - is to experimentally investigate the effect of water and high temperature on PAHs embedded in meteoritic mineral matrices. Our experiments will focus on the interaction between PAHs and water, PAHs and minerals, and PAHs and minerals and water under different temperature conditions.

PhD - Air Quality Measurements from Space & the Ground

Description

Nitrogen dioxide in the lower atmosphere is an indicator for air pollution. It can be measured from space, e.g. by the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) on board EOS-AURA. These satellite measurements can be used to study worldwide changes in air quality. The uncertainties in nitrogen dioxide concentrations derived from satellite measurements are still very large. The PhD student will focus on quantification, understanding and decreasing these uncertainties, using remotely sensed measurements from the ground and in-situ measurement from weather balloons. Atmospheric models will be used to couple these measurements and study their mutual differences. The PhD student will mostly work with data collected during several measurement campaigns in Europe, the USA, and China between 2007 and 2013. More data will be collected during one or two intensive measurement campaigns in the course of the project. he PhD student will be stationed at KNMI in De Bilt but will fully participate in the PhD programme of TUD.

Requirements

As a potential candidate, you should have a Master degree in (astro-) physics, meteorology, chemistry, remote sensing or a closely related discipline. You should have good communication skills, be fluent in English, and preferably also in Dutch. You should have strong analytical qualities, a high level of motivation and good learning skills. In particular, we will assess your potential for quickly developing scientific writing skills and self-directing skills. You preferably have experience with remote sensing and radiative transfer. Good programming skills in FORTRAN, C, C++ or Python, are an advantage.

The activities of the Post-doc should focus on the
temporal component of the above questions. In other words, how can a set of novel temporal representations be designed, implemented and used in a particular context, such that it visually supports users in their temporal reasoning process? The post doc should also investigate, and implement, analytical requirements for such temporal representations so that he/she can push forward the scientific boundary of geovisual analytics. You conduct and guide research and develop research cooperation, both inside and outside of the Faculty ITC, thereby contributing to the development of the departmental fields of expertise. You co-supervise PhD students working on a wide range of visual and analytical topics. Volunteered geographical information for public health applications
 
Information and communication technologies have greatly facilitated the acquisition, online storage and exchange of large amounts of georeferenced data by non-professionals. Activities in this relatively new domain fall in the realm of Volunteered Geographical Information (VGI), as most of the data is processed by volunteers. VGI data is often highly heterogeneous and might be massive – if volunteers get organized to crowd source it for a particular citizen science project. These two characteristics have resulted in limited research efforts to derive new and/or improved geospatial products and knowledge based on VGI. However, such products and knowledge are needed to support informed decision-making and to move towards a true “information society”. This research project thus deals with the development of novel methods and tools to properly visualize and analyze VGI data. As case study, we will focus on the role of VGI data to understand the impact of global environmental changes on public health. In this research project, we propose using geovisual analytics to derive meaning from and insight in the diversity of ever increasing VGI data collections and geo-products that can support public health applications such as the mapping and modeling of the spatial and temporal distribution and seasonality of vector-borne diseases. Geovisual analytics, is a developing discipline that integrates knowledge, methods and techniques from scientific geovisualization, human-computer interaction and spatio-temporal data management and analysis. As stated above, we envisage case studies strongly linked to public health where the integration of formal (GIS layers and remote sensing products) and informal (volunteers observations) datasets is expected.

PostDoc - Theoretical astrophysics

The Astronomical Institute Anton Pannekoek (API) is a lively research institute with about a dozen each of faculty and postdocs, and ~25 each of PhD and Masters students. About half of our researchers are foreign and English is the lingua franca in the Science Faculty of the University of Amsterdam. API is also part of the new Gravitation and Astroparticle Physics Amsterdam (GRAPPA; grappa.science.uva.nl) initiative, and the postdoc will be encouraged to participate actively in both institutes. API is located about a 20 minute bicycle ride from downtown Amsterdam, on the UvA Science Campus, also the informatics/computing technology center of the Netherlands. Amsterdam was recently ranked the 2nd most 'liveable' city in the world by the EIU.

Applications are invited for a 2 + 1 year (conditional on performance) postdoctoral research position, to begin ideally in Fall 2013. The successful candidate will work on accretion/jet studies, in particular on developing a new magnetohydrodynamic framework for linking jet physics to the inner accretion flow of black holes. The postdoc will be embedded in the research group of Dr. Sera Markoff, and interact with an extensive network of international collaborators. While the position is primarily theoretical, the project will also involve fitting broadband spectra from accreting black holes of all scales.

PhD - Galaxy evolution

The Netherlands Institute for Radio Astronomy (ASTRON) and the Kapteyn Astronomical Institute of the University of Groningen invite applications for a jointly hosted PhD position in the field of galaxy evolution. This four-year PhD project consists of astronomical research under the supervision of Dr. George Heald and Prof. Thijs van der Hulst. The primary theme is an investigation into the joint role of gas flows and magnetic fields in the evolution of spiral galaxies. The successful candidate will have access to unique datasets from frontline radio telescope facilities, including deep Low Frequency Array (LOFAR) and Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT) multifrequency observations of nearby galaxies. PhD - Marine geology

Massive amounts of dust (~1 Billion Ton) are blown from the Sahara into and over the Atlantic Ocean every year. This dust has numerous influences on the earth´s environment: it strongly alters the atmosphere through blocking incoming solar radiation and trapping outgoing heat that was reflected at the earth’s surface. In addition, aerosols carry huge amounts of metals and nutrients that can boost marine life, but also vast amounts of microbes, spores, and pathogens that are harmful for both marine- and terrestrial (including human!) life. The net effect of cooling/warming and ocean fertilisation/poisoning is presently far from understood as it depends on a complex set of parameters related to dust emission, dispersal, and deposition. In order to quantify these parameters, a team of scientists is developing and applying a novel approach to study the transatlantic flux of Saharan dust and its environmental effect on the ocean by studying a transect of five ocean moorings with two dust-collecting surface buoys below the Saharan dust plume from NW Africa to the Caribbean. For this multi-disciplinary team we are looking for a PhD student with a solid background in geochemistry to study the source-to-sink changes in nutrient composition of Saharan dust and the bio-availability of associated nutrients and their potential fertilisation of the photic zone. Will you be the one to answer the billion-€ question: “can we influence climate with desert dust?”. You will be working in close collaboration with a post-doctoral researcher, both of you focussing on work package II, which is dealing with the quantification of compositional changes of aerosols after deposition in the ocean, the marine environmental effects of dust fertilisation in relation to the carbon pump, and the export of organic material from photic zone to sea floor by dust ballasting. Groundwater Specialist

IGRAC (The International Groundwater Resource Assessment Centre) is the UNESCO global groundwater centre which also works under auspices of the World Meteorological Organization and has a close cooperation with the International Association of Hydrogeologists. Since 2003, IGRAC provides independent content and process support to assessment, monitoring, management and governance of internationally shared groundwaters. The centre promotes and facilitates worldwide exchange of groundwater knowledge and contributes to assessment of the global groundwater resources. The junior/medior groundwater specialist participates in the development and implementation of all major IGRAC activities, including the Global Groundwater Monitoring Network programme and the assessment of internationally shared aquifers within the ISARM programme (www.isarm.org). The specialist updates the content of the Global Groundwater Information System (GGIS) and oversees further GGIS software development. The duties also include organising, conducting and follow-up of meetings and workshops organised by IGRAC in various parts of the World.

PhD - Radar Imaging

The proposed research addresses the design, evaluation and experimental validation of new ultra-wideband radar imaging techniques for the reliable detection and location of targets in front of tunnel-boring machines. The candidate will be responsible for the folowing activities:

• Performing research according to the project plan,
• Preparing and writing all project deliverables for which MS3 is responsible,
• Developing theory for short-range, forward-looking imaging with sparse arrays,
• Experimentally verifying theory with short-range UWB data,
• Developing and analysing the algorithm(s) for non-ambiguous detection of small/weak moving targets in clutter, with adequate waveform coding and processing,
• Developing and analysing practical algorithm(s) for angular resolution of multiple extended targets.

The performance of this technique will be evaluated in simulations and validated with signals measured with real radar research platforms. The expected results should cover a broad range of applications, such as situation awareness in defence and security applications, traffic control radars - both automotive and infrastructure-based (mounted on highways, crossroads, bridges), and remote sensing applications using SAR. The project has triggered interest in the Dutch industry, which will participate in the research and contribute to the study by making operational radars available for the data acquisition, thus complementing the available radars at TU Delft. The researcher will work in a very international team connected to the main academic and industrial actors in the field.

PhD - Biophysics of virus assembly

The budding field of Physical Virology develops at the interface of Physics, Biology, Chemistry and Medicine and this research field has seen a tremendous growth in recent years. In our labs we focus on several sub-fields of Physical Virology, in particular we study the structural and mechanical properties of viral particles, their stability and the process of (dis)assembly (see for instance Nature Physics (2010) 6:733; Nano Letters (2011) 11:4865; PNAS (2012) 109:2342). The student will study assembly, stability and structure of viruses and the interactions of viruses with their genome. This will be done using various biophysical techniques, notably Atomic Force Microscopy, Optical Tweezers and Advanced Fluorescence Microscopy techniques. The PhD position is embedded in the Physics of Living Systems section under the joint supervision of Prof. Gijs Wuite and Dr. Wouter Roos and the research will be performed in collaboration with Prof. Heck from Universiteit Utrecht who will provide Mass Spectrometry data to complement our picture of viral assembly. The Physics of Living Systems (PLS) section at the Physics department of the Vrije Universiteit is a lively and vibrant section consisting of the groups of three professors, one associate professors and one assistant professor. The PLS section is internationally renowned for their experimental and theoretical biophysics research on a variety of topics ranging from molecular to systems length scales. In particular there is long standing expertise on viral systems and on nanoscale imaging and manipulation techniques. The section is part of the Institute of Lasers, Life and Biophotonics (LaserLaB) Amsterdam and is equipped with unique microscopy instrumentation and excellent facilities for biophysical research on the molecule to cell scale. The section is involved in many (inter)national collaborations and has a strong international atmosphere.
