PhD - Freshwater Palaeoecology

Institute of Earth Sciences of the University of Graz
Graz, Austria
Deadline date: November 30th, 2013

Description

The Institute of Earth Sciences of the University of Graz, Austria invites applications for a PhD position in Freshwater Palaeoecology within the project "Biogeography, ecology and taxonomy of the Neotropical ostracod Cytheridella" funded by the Austrian Sciences Fond (FWF).
The project aims at investigations of interrelationships between phenotypic variability, geographical distribution, and environmental conditions of the common Neotropical freshwater ostracod genus Cytheridella. Therefore we intend to analyse intraspecific morphological variability within and between populations in relation to ecological conditions, various habitats and site specific geochemical signatures. This actualistic approach will provide essential information which can be applied to fossil Cytheridella populations.
The successful candidate will be responsible for a variety of topics, including microfossil preparation, stable isotope measurements, data management and interpretation, and assistance during field work.

Requirements

We are looking for an enthusiastic ecologist with a strong and proven interest in (palaeo)biology, geochemistry (i.e., stable isotopes), hydrochemistry, and freshwater ecosystems. The candidate should have an MSc degree (or equivalent) in ecology, biology or closely related field. A multidisciplinary interest, the ability to collaborate in a group, and a strong motivation to obtain a PhD degree are essential.

PhD - Ultrafast Laser Science and Attosecond Physics

University of  Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences
Vienna, Austria

Description

The Photonics Institute of Vienna University of Technology invites applications for 2 PhD positions in ultrafast laser science and Attosecond Physics The research pursued at Photonics Institute focuses on the generation of ultrashort high-intensity laser pulses, generation of THz pulses and realization of nano-photonic devices as well as their applications. The focus of the position is to experimentally study ultrafast electron and nuclear dynamics in atoms and molecules exposed to strong laser fields on attosecond (10-18 second) to few femto-second (10-15 second) time-scales using channel-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. The specific goal is the reconstruction of the electronic wave-function of a complex quantum system by atto-second electron wavepacket interferometry, using the state-of-the-art experimental infrastructure of the institute, comprising ultrashort pulse lasers and coincidence momentum spectroscopy apparatus.

Requirements

Diploma or master's degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering or a related discipline is a must. Good social skills and ability to work in a team. Experience with femtosecond lasers and coincidence momentum spectroscopy would be an asset. Background in ultrafast intense laser science or related fields of advantage.

11 PhDs + 4 PostDocs - Infectious diseases

Fundación de Investigación Sanitaria de las Islas Baleares Ramon Llull
Palma de Mallorca

Description

Infectious diseases represent a major threat to the public health. The incidence of infectious diseases and the risk of pandemic spread are rising in part because of ever increasing human mobility, climate change that supports invasion of pathogens into new niches, and by continuous transfer of pathogens from diverse organisms into humans. Moreover, the increasing number of multidrug resistant (MDR) pathogens associated to a poor antibiotic pipeline and a growing immunosuppressed population favor the risk of severe infectious disease development. INBIONET, acronym standing for “INfection BIOlogy Training NETwork” (http://www.inbionet.eu/), at the interface between microbiology, immunology and cellular biology, aims to explore some of the most novel themes that are beginning to emerge in the mechanisms by which pathogens manipulate host defence responses. INBIONET will provide training for 11 PhD students, termed “Early Stage Researchers” (ESRs), and 4 Post-doctoral fellows, termed “Experienced Researchers” (ERs) in all areas of infection biology research. The INBIONET Network is coordinated by the Fundación Investigación Sanitaria Illes Balears in Spain, and comprises six other academic partners in the UK (Scotland)(U. of St. Andrews), Ireland (Trinity College Dublin), France (Institut Pasteur), Germany (Max Planck Institute for Infection Biology), Austria (University of Vienna), Switzerland (Ecole polytechnique Federale de Lausanne); and two industrial partners Sanofi (in France) and PreclinBiosystems (in Switzerland). The leading aims of INBIONET programme are:
