PhD - Instrumentación espacial

El grupo de investigación AEGORA (Astronomía Espacial y Gestión Óptima de Recursos Astronómicos) en el marco de la convocatoria de ayudas para contratos predoctorales de FPU, publicada en el BOE de 21/11/2013, ofrece la posibilidad de realizar una tesis doctoral enmarcada en el proyecto del Observatorio Espacial Mundial de Ultravioleta.
Título del Trabajo: Instrumento de imagen ultravioleta ISSIS para el Observatorio Espacial Mundial de Ultravioleta (WSO-UV).
WSO-UV es un proyecto internacional liderado por la Agencia Espacial de la Federacion Rusa (ROSCOSMOS) y desarrollado para garantizar el acceso al rango ultravioleta (UV) una vez que la vida del Telescopio Espacial Hubble llegue a su fin. Este telescopio espacial de 170 cm que será lanzado al final de esta década ha sido concebido como un observatorio para la formación de imágenes y espectroscopia astronómica. España está desarrollando en su totalidad ISSIS, uno de los tres instrumentos de los que constará el WSO-UV.
El desarrollo de nueva instrumentación espacial para aplicaciones científicas, como es el caso de ISSIS, conlleva la definición de objetivos concretos a alcanzar con los nuevos instrumentos (nuevos retos que no hayan sido alcanzados con misiones espaciales anteriores y avanzar en áreas del conocimiento poco o nada exploradas en el pasado).
El investigador predoctoral en formación participará en las tareas de diseño y construcción de ISSIS, así como en la definición y en el desarrollo de los test de verificación del instrumento.

The “Initial Training Network for Digital Cultural Heritage: Projecting our Past to the Future” with acronym ITN-DCH ( www.itn-dch.eu), is the first and one of the largest Marie Curie fellowship projects in the area of the e-documentation / e-preservation and Cultural Heritage (CH) protection funded by the European Union under the FP7 PEOPLE research framework (http://ec.europa.eu/research/mariecurieactions/ ). The Project started on the 1st of October 2013 and it is a consortium comprising of 14 full partners and 9 associate members covering the entire spectrum of European CH actors, ranging from academia, research institutions, industry, museums, archives and libraries. The project aims to train 20 fellows (16 Early Stage Researchers and 4 Experienced Researchers – 500 person months) in the area of CH digital documentation, preservation and protection in order to create for them a strong academic profile and market oriented skills which will significantly contribute to their career prospects. The consortium and the fellows training programme will be supported by a prestigious advisory board.
ITN-DCH aims -for the first time worldwide- to analyze, design, research, develop and validate an innovative multidisciplinary and inter-sectorial research training framework that covers the entire lifecycle of digital CH research for a cost– effective preservation, documentation, protection and presentation of cultural heritage. CH is an integral element of Europe and vital for the creation of a common European identity and one of the greatest assets for steering Europe’s social, economic development and job creation. However, the current research training activities in CH are fragmented and mostly design to be of a single discipline, failing to cover the whole lifecycle of Digital Cultural Heritage (DCH) research, which is by nature a multi-disciplinary and inter-sectorial research agenda. ITN-DCH targets all aspects of CH ranging from tangible (books, newspapers, images, drawings, manuscripts, uniforms, maps, artefacts, archaeological sites, monuments) to intangible content (e.g., music, performing arts, folklore, theatrical performances) and their inter-relationships. The project aims to boost the added value of CH assets by re-using them in real application environments (protection of CH, education, tourism industry, advertising, fashion, films, music, publishing, video games and TV) through research on (i) new personalized, interactive, mixed and augmented reality enabled e-services, (ii) new recommendations in data acquisition, (iii) new forms of representations (3D/4D) of both tangible /intangible assets and (iv) interoperable metadata forms that allow easy data exchange and  archiving.
The ITN-DCH project is seeking highly motivated and valuable researchers for PhD positions in the entire field of Digital Heritage, such as: Data Acquisition (Photogrammetry, Terrestrial laser scanning, GIS) and Computer Vision data processing, 3D reconstruction and modeling, symbolic, semantic and ontology representation, metadata, mixed and augmented reality technologies, CH e-services. All the fellows are supposed to travel between the project partners and attend a series of complementary training courses, scientific workshops and summer schools.

PhD - Chronic mental illness

Exploring the DISC1-VGF connection in chronic mental illness One ESR Marie S. Curie training position is available at the CIMUS Biomedical Research Institute, University of Santiago de Compostela, Spain (www.usc.es/cimus), in the team of Jesús R. Requena, as part of the Marie S. Curie Initial Training Network (ITN) InSens: (www.in-sens.eu).
Responsibilities and tasks:
The broad picture of the ITN in which this research project is embedded is to establish the molecular foundations of chronic mental illness (CMI) by elucidating the molecular mechanisms of the DISC1 pathway (Korth, 2012, Prion 6:134-41). DISC1, a protein that is truncated in a Scottish family with a high prevalence of CMI, forms insoluble aggregates in a subset of cases of mental disease (Leliveld et al. 2008, J Neurosci 28:3839-45). Following these studies, we have recently discovered that DISC1 regulates the expression of VGF, a neuropeptide precursor with potent antidepressant and neurotrophic properties (manuscript submitted). Therefore, we hypothesize that some of the roles of DISC1 deficits in mental disease might be mediated by reduced expression of VGF. In this context, we aim at investigating the molecular biology of this new member of the extended DISC1 pathway using a variety of molecular, cellular and animal tools, in close collaboration with the other groups that participate in this ITN. In particular, the applicant is expected to carry out studies to elucidate the signalling pathways connecting DISC1 and VGF, to identify VGF receptors and develop receptor agonists, and to study the effect of VGF-derived peptides and VGF receptor agonists on behavioural deficits of DISC1-deficient mouse models.

The University of Exeter invites applications for 4-year fully-funded PhD studentships as part of its EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Metamaterials. This new centre-of-excellence ,“XM2”, will act as a hub of international and industrial collaborations, training scientists and engineers with the relevant skills, knowledge and professional attributes to transform the exploitation of metamaterials across industry and academia.
We invite applications from independently-minded undergraduates that have demonstrated excellence at the undergraduate level in a relevant subject. Applicants should have an interest in electromagnetics, acoustics, nanotechnology and/or materials science, and are expected to demonstrate creativity and be open-minded to collaborative work and innovation.
Full scholarships (up to 18 per year), including a stipend to cover living expenses and fees, are available to UK students at standard EPSRC rates. A small number of these may also be available to EU and International students. Industry-orientated studentships may also include a top-up to the stipend.
Metamaterials have properties beyond those found in nature, and have found application across the electromagnetic and acoustic domains. We will run projects ranging from fundamental explorations of physics through to device design. Our students will research a wide range of metastructures spanning 10 orders of scale, from quantum considerations on the atomic scale through to plasmonics and biomimetics and the manufacture of novel composites at the nano-scale. From the control of electron spin (spintronics) and magnonics, to the centimetre and millimetre scale in both acoustics and the RF and microwave regimes.
XM2 is interdisciplinary in nature, with projects taking place across Physics and Engineering.
Our core themes are:

  • Plasmonics and graphene photonics including localisation of light at the nanoscale, graphene-based detectors and sources and energy harvesting.
  • Natural photonics including the exploration of metastructures and the biomimetics of natural structures.
  • THz and Microwave metamaterials including tuneable structures, imaging, surface waves, absorbers, energy harvesters and antennas.
  • Magnonics and magnetic metamaterials including spintronics and magnetodynamics.
  • Acoustic metamaterials including airborne and SONAR, metasurfaces, composite materials and absorbers.
  • Spatial transformations including the application of theory to electromagnetic and acoustic problems.

PhD - Biogeochemistry

Description

The successful candidate will be involved primarily in a field experiment aimed at understanding the interactions between nutrient, water availability and carbon fluxes. The objective of the PhD work is to gain further understanding on the role and interaction of water/nutrient (N and P) availability in determining CO2 and water fluxes, water use efficiency, and their temporal variability at ecosystem level by combining eddy covariance with a manipulation experiment and terrestrial biosphere models. The field sites are located in Spain, with periodic visits during planned field campaigns and activities. The knowledge of a programming language or/and the experience with process-based terrestrial biosphere models will be considered an added value.

PhD - Uranium melting and atomization

Description

The neutron source Heinz Maier-Leibnitz (FRM II) aims to convert its operation from usage of highly enriched Uranium (HEU) to lower enriched Uranium. This program is part of world wide efforts to minimize the usage of HEU in research reactors. For this reason, a new nuclear fuel with a very high Uranium density has to be developed. 
In the past years, the working group “Hochdichte Brennstoffe” of FRM II together with its partner AREVA-CERCA in France has constructed a device to produce Uranium powder of small spherical particles with diameters of 50-100 µm. This device, which is currently a prototype, needs Uranium pins for its operation that have to be casted beforehand in a specially designed furnace. 
To enforce our team, we are looking for a Ph.D. Student to continue and expand our work in this field. Large parts of the thesis have to be carried out at AREVA-CERCA in Romans, France. The work consists of two main parts: 

• The optimization and industrialization of the Uranium casting process, or depending on the outcome, the construction of a new furnace which satisfies the pronounced safety requirements of the nuclear industry.
Therefore, a safety plan has to be developed and implement together with the French nuclear authorities.

• The optimization and industrialization of the atomization process. This includes a design review, parameterization of the proto-type, process modelling, automation and more. Again, this has to be carried out in accordance with the French nuclear regulations.

Research Group "Macroecology and Biogeography of Global Change (MacroBio)" has a 36-months PhD position open for applications. The position is funded by the European Commission through the FP7 Research Project OPERAs and affiliated to the French     National Scientific Research Centre (CNRS).
The topic is the broad-scale spatial mapping and quantification of ecosystem service trade-offs following from management of agro-ecosystems in the Mediterranean basin. The context of the
research includes the environment (climate, land use) as well as trends in societal demands for services. Based on scientific literature, spatial databases and the outputs from a process-based ecosystem model, the candidate will analyze, quantify and map ecosystem service trade-offs. Service valuation and indicator representation methods will be developed with the IMBE team. The approach is pan-Mediterranean: a significant part of the work will therefore consist of helping to reduce gaps in data and knowledge for the sum of countries around the Mediterranean basin.
The research group works in close interaction with international programs such as Future Earth (through its project ecoSERVICES) and science-policy interfaces such as IPBES.

Since 1982, the “la Caixa” Foundation has offered several fellowship programmes aimed at allowing students to undertake postgraduate studies in Spain and abroad. Over the years, thousands of students have advanced their training thanks to “la Caixa” Foundation fellowship. In 2008, the “la Caixa” Foundation launched a new programme addressed to national and international students. As part of this programme, each year fellowships are awarded to students who wish to complete work toward their doctoral degrees. 
Under a collaborative Framework Agreement, the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness and the “la Caixa” Foundation continue the fellowship programme started last year with a 2nd call. This programme aims to help the recruitment of talented students from across the world by doing their doctoral thesis work in one of the accredited “Severo Ochoa” centres of excellence. The objective of this joint activity is to boost the research capacity of the best research institutions in Spain. The “la Caixa”-Severo Ochoa International PhD Programme at the Spanish National Cancer Research Centre (CNIO) offers cross-disciplinary training in state-of-the-art basic and applied cancer research within an international and very dynamic scientific environment. Four 4-year fellowships will be available during 2014.
This programme is open to highly motivated young graduates from all over the world who want to pursue ambitious research projects.
Characteristics:
-The programme has 4 year duration.
-During the 4 years, the graduate students will receive an employment contract. For the first year, the gross annual salary will be 18,546.56 EUR .The initial gross annual salary will be increased progressively to 4.08% the second annuity, 7.06% the third and 9.16% the fourth. In addition to the salary, the students will receive a onetime annual allowance of 1,500 EUR for the first and second years and 1,700 EUR for the third and fourth years.
