PhD - Instrumentación espacial

El grupo de investigación AEGORA (Astronomía Espacial y Gestión Óptima de Recursos Astronómicos) en el marco de la convocatoria de ayudas para contratos predoctorales de FPU, publicada en el BOE de 21/11/2013, ofrece la posibilidad de realizar una tesis doctoral enmarcada en el proyecto del Observatorio Espacial Mundial de Ultravioleta.
Título del Trabajo: Instrumento de imagen ultravioleta ISSIS para el Observatorio Espacial Mundial de Ultravioleta (WSO-UV).
WSO-UV es un proyecto internacional liderado por la Agencia Espacial de la Federacion Rusa (ROSCOSMOS) y desarrollado para garantizar el acceso al rango ultravioleta (UV) una vez que la vida del Telescopio Espacial Hubble llegue a su fin. Este telescopio espacial de 170 cm que será lanzado al final de esta década ha sido concebido como un observatorio para la formación de imágenes y espectroscopia astronómica. España está desarrollando en su totalidad ISSIS, uno de los tres instrumentos de los que constará el WSO-UV.
El desarrollo de nueva instrumentación espacial para aplicaciones científicas, como es el caso de ISSIS, conlleva la definición de objetivos concretos a alcanzar con los nuevos instrumentos (nuevos retos que no hayan sido alcanzados con misiones espaciales anteriores y avanzar en áreas del conocimiento poco o nada exploradas en el pasado).
El investigador predoctoral en formación participará en las tareas de diseño y construcción de ISSIS, así como en la definición y en el desarrollo de los test de verificación del instrumento.

The School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Birmingham invites applications for a tenured faculty position in Astrophysics at the Lectureship level, or exceptionally at a higher level.
The Astrophysics Group has a wide range of research activities, spanning theory, observations and instrumentation. Research areas include galactic and extra-galactic astrophysics, gravitational lensing and cosmology, exoplanets, and gravitational-wave science. Members of the group play important roles in major international efforts and collaborations, such as the Euclid Consortium, XXL, LoCuSS, GAMA, the LIGO Scientific Collaboration, the GEO Collaboration, the European and International Pulsar Timing Array Collaboration, and the Einstein gravitational-wave Telescope. PostDoc - Chemical evolution and abundance of massive stars

PostDoc - High-angular resolution studies of protoplanetary discs

Description

The astrophysics group at the University of Exeter invites applications for a postdoctoral position (Associate Research Fellow / Research Fellow) to work primarily with Dr. Stefan Kraus on observational studies related to star and planet formation. This position is funded through grants from the EU Marie Curie actions and the Leverhulme Trust. The post is funded for a fixed term period of 3 years and is expected to commence around October 2014, with a 12 month probationary period.
The broad goal of the position is to carry out original research on protoplanetary discs using high-angular resolution observations. The successful applicant will work in collaboration with the PI on modelling VLTI infrared and/or ALMA sub-millimeter interferometric data and complementary spectroscopic data. We are particularly interested in applicants with experience in modelling the line/continuum emission of protoplanetary discs or a strong background in accretion/outflow-launching physics. Prior experience with the technique
of interferometry is not required, but would be an asset.

Description

The Geneva Observatory in Geneva, Switzerland, announces the availability of a research position at the postdoctoral level, open to applicants of all nationalities.
The successful candidate will work on projects aimed at studying starburst galaxies in the distant Universe, involving multi-wavelength observations and/or modeling. He/she may in particular work with ground-based near-IR and longer wavelength observations including VLT, HST, Spitzer, Herschel, IRAM, APEX, and ALMA data from approved and upcoming projects, such as follow-up of the Herschel Lensing Survey, the VIMOS Ultra Deep Survey, and others. He/she will also have access to state-of-the-art modeling tools including 3D radiation transfer, SED fitting, and evolutionary synthesis codes. The candidate will work with the group of Prof. Daniel Schaerer in Geneva and within international collaborations.
The Geneva Observatory and the associated Laboratory of Astrophysics of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne carry out observational, interpretative and theoretical research in the fields of extra-solar planets, stellar physics, high energy astrophysics, galaxy evolution and dynamics, and observational cosmology.

Contract - Domain specialist in the area of telescope operations

Description

The Square Kilometre Array is a global project to build a multi-purpose radio telescope that will play a major role in answering key questions in modern astrophysics and cosmology.  It will be one of a small number of cornerstone observatories around the world.
We seek a Domain Specialist in the area of Telescope Operations.  Domain Specialists are staff with extensive experience in a particular field of interest to the SKA.  They may cross work breakdown structure boundaries and advise more than one work package manager. They support the SKA Architect in the generation of the top-level requirements and any re-baselining activities.  Domain Specialists provide engineering performance analysis as well as costing and other information to work package managers.

Requirements

The post-holder will have a relevant degree (or equivalent) in engineering or physical sciences and will be able to demonstrate experience at a high level in both the strategic planning and the day-to-day technical operations of a large science facility.

PhD - Theoretical physics

The position is part of a FWF funded project of Assoc.-Prof. Dr. Anita Reimer at Innsbruck University. 

Requirements

Applicants are expected to hold a Master degree / diploma in physics, astrophysics or astronomy. Good knowledge of astroparticle physics and/or gamma-ray astrophysics with strong interest in theory, experience in programming and good English language skills are required.

PostDoc - IFU Galaxy Evolution

Description

The Institute of Cosmology and Gravitation at the University of Portsmouth (www.icg.port.ac.uk) intends to appoint a Postdoctoral Researcher with expertise in integral field unit spectroscopy and data processing development to work on the upcoming project MaNGA (Mapping Nearby Galaxies at APO). MaNGA, as part of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey IV. MaNGA is an optical fiber-based multi-object IFU that will target
10,000 galaxies over a 6-year campaign with start of operations on 1st July 2014. The successful applicant will participate in the development of MaNGA's data processing software and in the scientific analysis of
MaNGA data with Dr Daniel Thomas, Dr Karen Masters, Dr Claudia Maraston and other MaNGA team members at the ICG and within the SDSS-IV collaboration.

Requirements

A PhD in astronomy or physics is required. Experience with data processing of large data sets and software development is preferable, and previous involvement in IFU observations and analysis will be considered an advantage. Experience with or interest in stellar population analysis and/or kinematics would be useful.

PostDoc - Astrophysics

Description

Two Postdoctoral positions are available for the optical investigation of the most extensive, but faint, emission line phenomena at high galactic latitudes: these are the 100 degree long radio spurs, the HI bridge between the Magellanic Clouds and the Galaxy, the foreground for correction of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) measurements, the detection and study of large-scale filamentary structures (i.e. supernova remnants).
A very sensitive, fully-funded, state-of-the-art, instrument is being constructed for this purpose (the Manchester-Athens Wide Field Camera -- MAWFC) in a joint project between the National Observatory Athens (Dr. P. Boumis) and Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics (Prof. J. Meaburn, Dr. C. Dickinson). The successful applicants will drive the project from Greece (National Observatory of Athens, Institute of Astronomy, Astrophysics, Space Applications and Remote Sensing) but must be prepared to observe world-wide and must embrace hands-on observations with an unusual instrument and analysis of the data.

Requirements

A PhD degree in astrophysics is a prerequisite. The positions will be funded by the "ARISTEIA II" program of the Greek Secreteriat of Research and Technology.

Requisitos

Los solicitantes deberán acreditar una nota media del expediente académico en la escala 0-10, igual o superior a 7.30 para el grado en Ciencias, 8.22 para el Master en Ciencias, 6.85 para el grado en Ingeniería y 8.06 para el Master en Ingeniería.
Los solicitantes deben estar matriculados o tienen que estar en condiciones de matricularse en el curso 2013-2014 en un programa de doctorado de una Universidad Española, preferentemente con “mención hacia la excelencia” en el curso 2012-2013 o evaluación favorable de la ANECA.
Fecha de finalización de los estudios:
Los solicitantes deberán haber concluido sus estudios en los periodos que a continuación se indican:

a) Con posterioridad al 1 de enero de 2010, en el caso de licenciados, ingenieros y arquitectos o equivalente en sistemas universitarios extranjeros no adaptados al EEES.
b) Con posterioridad al 1 de enero de 2009, en el caso de diplomados, ingenieros técnicos y arquitectos técnicos o equivalente en sistemas universitarios extranjeros no adaptados al EEES, que hayan realizado el Master para acceso al doctorado.
c) Con posterioridad al 1 de enero de 2009, en el caso de estudios de Grado del EEES de 180 créditos.
d) Con posterioridad al 1 de enero de 2010, en el caso de estudios de Grado del EEES de 240 créditos.
e) Con anterioridad a las señaladas y posterioridad a 1 de enero de 2006 en los siguientes
casos:
e.1) Los que se encuentren en posesión del título oficial de la especialidad en Medicina, Farmacia, Biología, Química o Psicología que en el momento de solicitar la beca estén en posesión del título Oficial de Especialidad Médica (MIR) o Farmacéutica (FIR) o cuenten con el Certificado Oficial de Especialidad en Biología (BIR), Química (QUIR) o Psicología (PIR).
e.2) Los que se hayan dedicado a la atención y cuidado de hijos menores de seis años entre el 1 de enero de 2006 y el 1 de enero de 2010.
e.3) Para los solicitantes que posean una discapacidad igual o superior al 50 por ciento, el periodo de finalización de estudios señalado en los apartados a), b), c) y d) precedentes quedará ampliado en dos años respectivamente.
La duración máxima de las ayudas será de cuarenta y ocho meses, contados a partir de la fecha de alta en el centro de adscripción, sin perjuicio de los descuentos por becas y ayudas para la formación doctoral disfrutadas con anterioridad.
Posibilidades:
