PostDoc - Biogeochemistry and salinity remote sensing

The Laboratoire d'Océanographie et du Climat - Expérimentation et Approches Numériques (LOCEAN)/ Institut Pierre Simon Laplace (IPSL) invites applications for a 15 months, possibly renewable, postdoctoral position. The position is opened in the frame of the EU FP7 Carbochange (carbochange.b.uib.no) and of the European Space Agency SMOS+SOS (www.smos-sos.org) projects. The successful candidate will join a LOCEAN team which has a lead expertise in salinity remote sensing and air-sea CO2 fluxes. The research project aims at demonstrating the contribution of new satellite sea surface salinity, SSS, to other existing remotely sensed products (sea surface temperature, ocean colour, altimetry) for improving regional air-sea CO2 fluxes estimates.
The SMOS (Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity) mission launched in november 2009 has demonstrated the capability of the satellite L-band radiometry to sense SSS. Almost 4 years of SMOS SSS data are now available. The Aquarius satellite mission delivers SSS since more than 2 years. At 10 days-100x100km2 scale, the precision of the SMOS and Aquarius SSS is on the order of 0.2-0.3 in tropical and subtropical regions.
The estimate of the air-sea CO2 flux at regional scale, based on in situ measurements, is challenging due to the sparse measurements of the CO2 partial pressure at the ocean surface, pCO2. Hence the reliability of the estimated fluxes strongly relies on the methods used to extrapolate the in-situ pCO2 measurements. Satellite sea surface temperature and chlorophyll have been widely used in the past in such methods, as they contain information about physical and biological processes driving pCO2 variability. On another hand, several studies have shown that SSS brings complementary information, that could, in particular, help to understand and identify the processes which control the pCO2 signatures associated with various water masses and biogeochemical provinces. In this project, we propose to use the satellite SSS data, in conjunction with in situ pCO2 (in particular but not exclusively the ones available in the SOCAT data base), in regions well and accurately sampled by SMOS and by ship pCO2, for 1) interpreting the observed pCO2 variability, 2) developing new methodology for extrapolating pCO2 and 3) demonstrating the potential of new satellite SSS at improving air-sea CO2 flux estimates at regional scale.

Requirements 

Applicants should have a background in ocean biogeochemistry, and preferentially in ocean remote sensing. They should have significant experience in data processing.

Students will join a dynamic and growing lab of graduate and undergraduate students working on a wide range of landscape ecology projects that demand a heavy component of computing power, including:

  • Forest connectivity estimation and validation at regional and continental scales, using Circuitscape.
  • Regional estimation of lake carbon content with remote sensing, GIS, and Bayesian stats in 10**6 lakes in Quebec.
  • Use of Google Earth Engine for estimation of landscape-scale patterns across very large areas.
  • Spatial and statistical patterns of landscape metrics at continental and regional scales.

Requirements

Successful candidates will have strong to moderate programming experience, ideally in R or Python or a similar language like Matlab or Java. Depending on the project, specific experience with certain tools will be of especially high value, including: remote sensing, GIS, simulation modeling, data mining techniques in very large data sets and coursework in statistics. Canadian students who would be eligible for federal and provincial scholarships are given high priority.

PhD - Atmospheric Remote Sensing

Description

The Institute of Applied Physics (IAP, University of Bern) has an open PhD student position for monitoring, analysis and exploration of atmospheric composition change, radiative transfer and dynamical processes. The IAP is part of the Oeschger Centre for Climate Change Research and contributes to the Swiss Global Atmosphere Watch (GAW) programme and the Network for the Detection of Atmospheric Composition Change (NDACC). The IAP has an excellent reputation in atmospheric remote sensing and routinely operates ground-based microwave radiometers for long-term monitoring of ozone and water vapour in the lower and middle atmosphere. You will retrieve and interpret vertical profiles of stratospheric and mesospheric ozone. You will take care on the ozone microwave radiometer. The PhD thesis will focus on the spatio-temporal variability of the ozone distribution. Dependencies between ozone, water vapour, temperature, dynamics, and photochemistry will be analysed on time scales from 10 minutes to 20 years. Coupling of troposphere, stratosphere and mesosphere by radiation, waves, atmospheric circulation and composition will be explored by means of observations and simulations. Cross-validation studies between ground stations, satellites and chemistry-climate models are possible as well as trend analysis of long-term series of stratospheric ozone. 

Requirements

These versatile tasks require a PhD student with strong interest in:

Microwave remote sensing and atmospheric processes 
Programming, data analysis and retrieval techniques 
Time series analysis 
Writing and reading of scientifc publications.

Ocean Colour Scientist

Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML) is seeking to appoint an Ocean Colour Scientist to work on the ESA Climate Change Initiative project. PML is recognised internationally as a dynamic, highly innovative, independent and impartial deliverer of scientific research and advice on the marine environment. PML is looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated Earth Observation scientist to work on the European Space Agency funded Ocean Colour CCI project to improve the error characteristics of global ocean colour (OC) data for use in climate studies. The appointment is a full time permanent position. If successful you will: research, develop and implement improved in-water, and possibly atmospheric correction, algorithms for ocean colour retrieval; assist with production of a high quality global OC time series from MERIS, MODIS, SeaWiFS and Sentinel 3 OLCI; compare these data with existing OC products; investigate links with other CCI projects (such as sea-surface temperature CCI); investigate other ocean colour sensors such as the NOAA VIIRS and ISRO OCM-2; and interact with the international EO and climate communities.

Requirements

You will have ideally a PhD or 3+ years post-graduate research experience in a numerate scientific discipline and experience in: EO data processing and handling; or quantitative marine bio-optical theory, marine sciences or biogeochemistry; or ocean colour remote sensing. Familiarity with SeaDAS or BEAM would be beneficial but not essential. You should possess proven experience and skills in computer programming in C, C++, IDL, Java or Perl preferably in a Linux environment.

PhD - Air Quality Measurements from Space & the Ground

Description

Nitrogen dioxide in the lower atmosphere is an indicator for air pollution. It can be measured from space, e.g. by the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) on board EOS-AURA. These satellite measurements can be used to study worldwide changes in air quality. The uncertainties in nitrogen dioxide concentrations derived from satellite measurements are still very large. The PhD student will focus on quantification, understanding and decreasing these uncertainties, using remotely sensed measurements from the ground and in-situ measurement from weather balloons. Atmospheric models will be used to couple these measurements and study their mutual differences. The PhD student will mostly work with data collected during several measurement campaigns in Europe, the USA, and China between 2007 and 2013. More data will be collected during one or two intensive measurement campaigns in the course of the project. he PhD student will be stationed at KNMI in De Bilt but will fully participate in the PhD programme of TUD.

Requirements

As a potential candidate, you should have a Master degree in (astro-) physics, meteorology, chemistry, remote sensing or a closely related discipline. You should have good communication skills, be fluent in English, and preferably also in Dutch. You should have strong analytical qualities, a high level of motivation and good learning skills. In particular, we will assess your potential for quickly developing scientific writing skills and self-directing skills. You preferably have experience with remote sensing and radiative transfer. Good programming skills in FORTRAN, C, C++ or Python, are an advantage.

Volunteered geographical information for public health applications
 
Information and communication technologies have greatly facilitated the acquisition, online storage and exchange of large amounts of georeferenced data by non-professionals. Activities in this relatively new domain fall in the realm of Volunteered Geographical Information (VGI), as most of the data is processed by volunteers. VGI data is often highly heterogeneous and might be massive – if volunteers get organized to crowd source it for a particular citizen science project. These two characteristics have resulted in limited research efforts to derive new and/or improved geospatial products and knowledge based on VGI. However, such products and knowledge are needed to support informed decision-making and to move towards a true “information society”. This research project thus deals with the development of novel methods and tools to properly visualize and analyze VGI data. As case study, we will focus on the role of VGI data to understand the impact of global environmental changes on public health. In this research project, we propose using geovisual analytics to derive meaning from and insight in the diversity of ever increasing VGI data collections and geo-products that can support public health applications such as the mapping and modeling of the spatial and temporal distribution and seasonality of vector-borne diseases. Geovisual analytics, is a developing discipline that integrates knowledge, methods and techniques from scientific geovisualization, human-computer interaction and spatio-temporal data management and analysis. As stated above, we envisage case studies strongly linked to public health where the integration of formal (GIS layers and remote sensing products) and informal (volunteers observations) datasets is expected.

Ecometrica Ltd is recruiting an analyst with expertise in ecosystem services and/or land use and/or forestry and/or agriculture to work as part of a small multi-disciplinary team consisting of land use, GIS and remote sensing experts based in Edinburgh, UK. This position offers a unique and exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic, pro-active candidate with a good understanding of the natural environment and biological processes. You will form part of a dynamic team engaged in land use-related projects. You will also be actively involved in the development of client applications on Ecometrica’s online mapping platform, Our Ecosystem. A basic understanding of GIS is therefore a strong advantage. We are seeking a solution-driven analyst who can translate client needs into a realistic project plan. You should be able to work accurately under pressure, both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team. Good communication and client-facing skills are important and you will be expected to be able to communicate to a non-technical audience.

Requirements

• Masters degree or similar postgraduate qualification or at least 2 years’ relevant work experience
• Solid understanding of land use/ecology/forestry/agriculture/vegetation science
• Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills
• Proficient computer and software user
• Fluent English language speaker and high quality of written English
• Ability for critical thinking and coherent argument
• Eligible to work in the UK
