PhD - Geography & GIS Science

GIScience Center, Department of Geography
University of Zurich, Switzerland

Description

Position A: Place descriptions from user generated content and unstructured text
Position B: Place-based map generalization

The GIScience Center at the Department of Geography, University of Zurich invites applications for 2 PhDs position to work on a Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) grant investigating the use of user-generated content and unstructured text in the map generalization process to generate place-based maps.
Position A will focus on the generation of place descriptions using UGC and unstructured text. These descriptions will address three aspects of place as defined by Agnew (2012): location(placenames and associated regions), locale (the environment and associated affordances within such a region) and sense of place (the experiences offered by a place to a group and the shared conceptualization of a place important to that group). Place descriptions will take two forms – population of a schema designed directly to drive the generalization process with traditional geometric data, and richer, more textually based descriptions, requiring more novel methods of incorporation into place-based maps. The PhD candidate will be supervised by Prof. Ross Purves and will be a member of the Geocomputation Unit in the GIScience Center, whose research focuses on the computational methods for the analysis of a wide range of geographic data sources.
Position B will develop processes that allow controlling the automated generalization operations, using place descriptions generated in the related PhD project A, such that place-based maps can be obtained. Work will start with a design of the components of place-based map generalization (data types, data flows, generalization operators, and map designs). Procedures will be developed that allow integrating the geometries, semantics, and textual descriptions of place descriptions into a form that can be usefully displayed on a map. Specialized generalization operators will be developed that can exploit place descriptions, with a focus on abstraction and schematization. Finally, coherent processes of place-based generalization will be built from these operators. The PhD candidate will be supervised by Prof. Robert Weibel and will be a member of the GIS Unit in the GIScience Center, whose research focuses on themes such as digital cartography and mobile systems as well as movement analysis.
Although clear initial research goals have been developed within the SNSF proposal, the PhD candidates will be expected to develop and refine these, in collaboration with their supervisory team and colleague, as a first stage of their research work.
The GIS and Geocomputation Units form part of the GIScience Centre, which hosts research groups working on diverse topics including language and space, geographic information retrieval, digital terrain modelling, uncertainty modelling, movement analysis, digital cartography and mobile systems, geovisual analytics, and spatial cognition.

Requirements

We are looking for highly motivated original thinkers, with a desire to develop a research career and with a passion for science. In return we offer excellent working conditions, a stimulating environment and Zurich’s high quality of life. Applicants are required to have completed, or to complete before appointment, a Masters level degree at a high standard in a relevant field such as Geographic Information Science (GIScience), computing science, geography or geomatics. Additionally, computational linguistics (for Position A) or cartography (for Position B). Basic programming skills, as well as a willingness to develop these are a prerequisite.
Applicants should also have a very good standard of written and spoken English. Fluency, or a willingness to learn, of one or more of Switzerland’s national languages would also be an advantage, especially for Position A.

PhD - 4 Fellowships within the Severo Ochoa Program

Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC)
Barcelona, Spain

Description and main requirements

4 OPEN VACANCIES FOR PHD FELLOWSHIPS at BSC within the SEVERO OCHOA PROGRAM BSC-CNS is at the service of the international scientific community and industry that require High Performance Computing resources. The multidisciplinary research team and the computational facilities, including MareNostrum, make BSC-CNS an international center of excellence in e-Science. Closing date: 31st October.
BSC-CNS is looking for young scientists from the national and international community. We encourage applications from highly motivated engineers and computational scientists with outstanding qualifications. Successful candidates will join research groups with top-level scientists and will carry out their research in cutting-edge areas of Computer Sciences, Life Sciences, Earth Sciences and Computer Applications in Sciences and Engineering.

Computer Sciences
TITLE: A Domain Specific Language (DSL) for solving Convection-Diffusion-Reaction (CDR) equations.
The Parallel Programming Models group from the Computer Science Department at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center is offering a PhD grant in the context of the Severo Ochoa project. The goal of the project is to develop a framework for Domain Specific Languages that leverages the power of HPC Systems. We are looking for a motivated and talented PhD student with background/interest in functional programming languages, domain specific languages (DSLs), parallel programming models and computer architecture.
The position requires knowledge of Haskell or Scala and C++ languages.
We will value previous experience in the development of DSLs, programming models and/or experience with parallel and distributed programming in general. Knowledge of OmpSs, MPI or CUDA/OpenCL (or other parallel languages) will be valued.

Life Sciences
TITLE: Development of new methodology for high-throughput structural annotation of pathological mutations involved in protein interactions, with application to personalized medicine.
There is an exponentially increasing amount of SNPs and pathological mutation data obtained from genomics studies that will be used for diagnostic purposes in a personalized medicine context. However, we need to understand them at molecular level to be able to predict the effect of new mutations (not annotated in databases) or to be used for new therapeutics.
Many of these mutations are involved in protein interactions that are annotated in databases, but few of them are characterized at structural level. In order to dramatically expand the number of mutations that can be structurally mapped into protein-protein interactions, we will build models and identify potential protein interfaces by computational docking at high-throughput scale (interactomics). In collaboration with the Computer Sciences Department, we will develop novel methodologies that allow a fast access to the protein interaction repositories and computational docking algorithms that can run in multiple computational platforms. The implementation of this technology will have immediate impact in the clinical use for diagnostic purposes and future genomic-based treatment decisions.

Earth Sciences
-TITLE: Air Quality and Climate/Meteorology Feedbacks: Aerosol interaction on atmospheric processes at global scale.
The Earth Sciences Department at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center is offering a PhD grant in the context of the Severo Ochoa project. The goal of the project is to study the aerosol feedbacks on atmospheric processes with a high-resolution global model. During the project, a high-resolution configuration of a global model developed at the center will be deployed with the collaboration of the Computer Sciences Department. The candidate will implement the aerosols feedbacks on meteorology and chemistry and will quantify the impact of the aerosol feedbacks of the most global relevant aerosols on meteorology and air quality.
The results will provide new insights on the role of such processes and it characterization with a high-resolution modeling system. We are looking for a motivated and talented PhD student with a strong background in physics, chemistry and atmospheric modelling. A degree on physics or meteorology is strongly recommended. The position requires the knowledge of Fortran and C languages and wide experience with NetCDF format files, post-processing tools as NCO, CDO, and analysis tools as R, GDL, Matlab.

Computer Applications in Sciences and Engineering
- TITLE:Integrating cardiac biomechanical simulations with medical images.
The CASE department develops Alya, an HPC-based simulation platform, capable of running efficiently in thousands of processors. Biomechanics is among the most active application lines of Alya, particularly, those related to the cardiovascular system. This code is the core simulation tool of our cardiac compuational model Alya Red CCM, where the heart is modelled at organ level, coupling electrical activation, muscular action and blood flow.
This FPI project aims to integrate medical image and simulation in a seamless pipeline, creating a unique tool.
The position requires very good programming skills (C and/or modern Fortran, parallel programming...), computational mechanics knowledge (numerical methods, computational geometry...) and a extreme curiosity and eagerness to work in a highly multidisciplinary
project.

PhD - Deploying Security Measures

University of Twente
Twente, Netherlands

Description

The effects of terrorist and piracy activities, or generally speaking activities of intelligent opponents can have a large impact on the socio-economic and military well-fare. To counter these increasing, multiple threats, security measures/forces should be deployed to surveil and patrol assigned areas to protect valuable objects and critical infrastructure (e.g. harbours, airports, merchant ships and routes). However, current OR models do not always adequately take into account the complexity of these kind of military operations and the scarcity of resources. Therefore, we are facing the challenge to develop adequate models and methods for the assessment of deployment of scarce security forces in an efficient and effective way given multiple, responsive and adaptive threats, also taking into consideration new technological developments. The key challenge to be tackled in this PhD research is: How to optimally deploy security forces to protect critical infrastructures given limited resources and taking into account multiple adversaries and their intelligent responses?

Requirements

We are searching for an enthusiastic, creative and perseverant PhD student that has:
- a MsC in Econometrics, Operations Research, Applied Mathematics or equivalent - good programming skills (e.g. Matlab, Java) - excellent written and spoken English language skills.
- good communication skills, and the ability to work independently and in a multidisciplinary team.
- affinity with Defence, Safety and Security.
