PostDoc - Green tree retention at clearcuts

Description

Project description: The overall objective of this research project is to analyze the consequences of intensified forest management and conservation efforts conducted in managed forests. The results will be used when formulating recommendations about how to improve the current practice, to mitigate the negative effects on biodiversity of forestry. Field data is already available, so the post doc will focus on analyses and writing. A first project deals with tree mortality when trees are retained on clearcuts. When that project is finished, the post doc can chose between several options: (i) to analyze the occurrence of redlisted beetles on dead trees on clearcuts in relation with characteristics of the surrounding landscape, (ii) to analyze the conservation value of low-productive forests in relation to more productive forests, by comparing the availability of structures important for biodiversity, (iii) something else which comes up during the visit at SLU, or based on material the post doc has available. The post doc will be part of a group who conducts policy-relevant research on forestry and biodiversity (http://www.slu.se/en/departments/ecology/research/conservation-biology/). PhD - Development and optimisation of separation processes for heavy rare earths

Description

The Industrial Materials Recycling group, included into the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, carries out research in material recycling and development of new recycling methods. Current projects concern recovery of metals from spent batteries, CIGS solar cells, low energy lamps, flat screens, paint residues and waste combustion ash. The group consists of 5 senior scientists, 4 postdocs and 10 PhD students and works together with the Nuclear Chemistry group which means a good availability of advanced analytical methods.
Project: "Development and optimisation of separation processes for heavy rare earths". Objectives: Development of extractants for solvent extraction separation of heavy rare earths from magnet leachates & Development and assessment of new environmentally friendly extractants for REE separation.
Your major responsibilities as PhD student is to pursue your own doctoral studies. You are expected to develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing, both in Swedish and in English. The position generally also includes teaching on Chalmers' undergraduate level or performing other duties corresponding to 20 per cent of working hours.
To carry out the research project assigned to him/her To take the compulsory courses of PhD students at Chalmers and additional doctoral courses corresponding to 30 points for a licentiate degree and 60 points for a PhD degree.To take part in the activities of the EREAN network. To carry out the secondment periods indicated in the project descriptions.To take part in the teaching and departmental duties as our other doctoral students.

Requirements

To qualify as a PhD student, you must have a master's level degree corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering. The applicant for ESR8 should be strong in organic chemistry, synthesis and analytical methods.
The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in Swedish and English. If Swedish is not your native language, you should be able to teach in Swedish after two years. Chalmers offers Swedish courses.
English language: It is a requirement that network fellows will show that their ability to understand and express themselves in both written and spoken English is sufficiently high for them to derive the full benefit from the networktraining.
Conditions of international mobility of researchers: Researchers are required to undertake trans-national mobility (i.e. move from one country to another) when taking up the appointment. At the time of selection by the host organisation, researchers must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of their host organisation for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to their recruitment. Short stays, such as holidays, are not taken into account.

PhD - Terrestrial carbon cycle model optimisation

The Department of Physical Geography and Ecosystem Science is has an opening for a PhD student with a strong background in Physical Geography and Ecosystems Analysis, Geoecology, Environmental Engineering, mathematics or physics to work with model-data fusion methods on optimising terrestrial CO2 fluxes using the LPJ-GUESS dynamic vegetation model.
The PhD student will carry out research within the project "Spatio-temporal statistical methods for inverse modelling of CO2 fluxes" which is a collaboration involving 4-5 senior scientists and one additional PhD student at the Departments of Mathematical Statistics and Physical Geography and Ecosystem Science.
The student will work with and refine established data assimilation techniques to exploit the complementary strengths of ecosystem flux measurements, remote sensing data and process-based ecosystem modelling in terms of quantifying and upscaling ecosystem CO2 fluxes from forest stands and surrounding landscapes to a braoder regional scale.

Requirements

The applicants are expected to hold a university degree (preferably MSc. or equivalent) in natural sciences. Candidates must possess an Honours or Masters degree in a quantitative subject such as Physical Geography and Ecosystems Analysis, Geoecology, Environmental Engineering, Mathematics, Physics or a related subject of relevance to the research. Good numerical skills with advanced knowledge of quantitative methods and computer programming experience, as well as interest in climate change and terrestrial ecology, are required. Knowledge of FORTRAN, C/C++, MATLAB and previous experience working with process-based ecosystem models and large environmental datasets is an important advantage. Experience with optimisation methods or the LPJ-GUESS ecosystem model is an important advantage. Candidates must be fluent in written and spoken English. We seek a well-motivated candidate who is able to work independently while contributing as part of a team.

Requirements

You typically have master degree (or corresponding) in Ergonomics or Engineering with a profile in Ergonomics, Human Factors, or Human Factors Engineering. A mixed technical and human factors background is of particular value. A higher degree than bachelor is necessary in order to be meet the requirements. Furthermore is experience of research and/or development work in the domain an advantage, e.g. if you have worked with driver-vehicle interaction, simulator studies and/or computer manikins/models. 
You should be open-minded and interested in pursuing results. It is important that you have the ability to work in teams, in particular cross-disciplinary teams, but you must also be able to work independently. You should have an ability and interest to communicate your practical as well as scientific results, both orally and written. You need to be fluent in English. However, due to the character of the research work, you should also be able to understand and speak Swedish.

PhD - Dynamic meteorology

Description

This project aims at identifying links between the jet stream variability and the atmospheric system's attractor. Low-frequency variability in midlatitude weather is a topic of intensive research because of its importance in understanding and improving predictability in weather and climate. It will involve using simplified quasi-geostrophic models, for example barotropic and baroclinic models on the sphere, as well as comprehensive general circulation models and reanalysis data.

Requirements

Applicants must have completed a university degree or university studies of 240 ECTS points (corresponding to 4 years of study), of which at least 60 points at the master level. At least 90 points must be in one of the subjects meteorology, oceanography, physics or chemistry, at least 15 points must be in mathematics, and an independent project work corresponding to at least 15 points must have been completed. The requirements can also be met by acquiring the corresponding knowledge in some other way, in Sweden or abroad.

Research engineer for space observatory

Description

The work focuses engineering efforts related to the pre-construction phase of the SKA (Square Kilometre Array, see http://www.skatelescope.org/) - in particular in the area of the development of ultra-wideband feeds and cryogenic package for the Low Noise Amplifier. The successful applicant will form part of team doing EM modeling using simulation software, high-level system modeling, design and testing of locally developed prototypes. In addition work is being done on design improvement for cost reduction and improved product reliability. Candidates with experience in one or more of the above areas are sought. The position is a two year contract, with a possibility for permanent extension.  Up to 20% of the time will be dedicated to involvement in other projects related to development of new equipment for the OSO telescopes.

Requirements

Applicants for this post should have a university degree in electrical engineering and at least 3 years of experience in microwave design and testing.
-Technical experience in the design of active and passive microwave components.
-Hands-on experience working in lab environment with the assembly and characterization of microwave systems.
-Comfortable working in a standalone capacity as well as part of a team.
-Good abilities in spoken and written English. Experience in writing technical reports.
It will be desirable:
-Experience in the design of antennas, feeds and reflector antenna systems.
-Familiar with CST, HFSS, GRASP and MATLAB software packages.
-Knowledge of cryogenics, vacuum and thermal modeling.
-Experience in mechanical design with Autodesk Inventor.

PostDoc - Modelling graphene-based devices and systems

Your main duty as a tenure-track assistant professor is to perform your own research as a member of a research group. The position also includes teaching for about 20% of your working hours, on undergraduate and master's levels, as well as supervising and co-supervising PhD students. PostDoc - Fluid dynamics

We are looking for an excellent, motivated, self-driven post-doctoral researcher to work in the area of fluid dynamics. The position is for 24 months and located at the Department of Applied Mechanics, division of Fluid Dynamics. The research project is devoted to research on reduction of skin friction of marine transport by use of advanced surface coatings. The postdoctoral fellow will take care on CFD calculations and participate in experimental studies in cooperation with another post-doc. Present project focuses on measurements and simulations of the boundary layer flow. The measurements will be conducted in our own small-scale rig with PIV (particle image velocimetry). The CFD studies will be conducted with ANSYS Fluent and CFX. Your major responsibility as postdoc is to perform your own research in a research group. Your responsibilities will be merit yourself as Program Manager, corresponding to a 30% position during four years, of a EU FP7 Marie Curie Initial Training Network, FINON - Female Investigators in Nonlinear Optical Nanoscopy, consisting of 6 PIs from Chalmers University of Technology (coordinator), AstraZeneca, Cardiff University, Institut Fresnel, Max Planck Institute Mainz, and EPFL, 8 associated partners from the academia (bio/material sciences) and industry (photonics, microscopy), and 12 PhD students. Your tasks will be to take the responsibility for the reporting to EU, the communication between PIs, Associated Partners and PhD students, outreach activities, make sure that the outlined program is followed, that training and scientific milestones and deliverables are fulfilled, act as internal and external contact person, and manage the content on the FINON web site etc. 

Requirements

MSc in Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Biomaterial sciences, Cell/Molecular biology and/or Biophysics.
PhD in tissue engineering/regenerative medicine/3D growth of cells in tissue-mimicking environments/stem cell biology or in the mechanisms behind neurodegenerative diseases/protein misfolding/neurosciences; the degree should generally not be older than three years. You are expected to demonstrate good potential within research by for instance a strong publication list, have international experience, and/or attracting research grants. The Cava Lab at MIMS/UmU is just launching an innovative project that emerges from the need for developing an open, collaborative and multidisciplinary platform to discover and exploit murein diversity in the Bacteria Kingdom. The MUREINome will generate abundance and novelty of results that will be instrumental to address fascinating unanswered questions in microbiology (i.e. how cell wall dynamics influence: adaptation to extreme environments, pathogen-host interactions, biofilm life cycle, sporulation/germination and social-related behaviors…). Furthermore, since murein is fundamental for both bacterial viability and fitness to challenging conditions, variability emerging from this project might have an extraordinary potential as novel and specific targets for the development of a “bacteria-specific” class of antimicrobials and their further exploitation in clinical therapies. The positions are aimed for two Post-Doctoral Fellows and two PhD students.
 
Requirements
 
Candidates must have degree in biochemistry, biology, chemistry or similar. A good knowledge in microbiology and/or analytical chemistry (i.e. HPLC and mass spectroscopy methods) are particularly qualifying. Enthusiasm, the ability for good team work, and a good command of the English language, both written and spoken, are key qualifications.

Postdoc/Researcher - Atmospheric CO2 Modelling

The Department of Physical Geography and Ecosystem Science is seeking to appoint a Postdoc/Researcher with a strong background in atmospheric sciences, meteorology, applied mathematics or physics to work on high resolution atmospheric CO2 modelling. The position is part of a newly funded project within the Swedish strategic research programme in e-Science eSSENCE (http://essenceofescience.se). It is in close collaboration with the Meteorology Group within the Department of Earth Science at Uppsala University, Sweden. The project initially focuses on the development and set up of a high-resolution atmospheric modelling system around a mesoscale atmospheric model to simulate regional atmospheric CO2 concentrations in Sweden. This system will then be included in the carbon cycle inverse modelling activities at Lund University to set up an inversion system enabling improved quantification of local CO2 sources and sinks. The position is embedded in the wider eSSENCE project, the national Integrated Carbon Observation System - Sweden (ICOS-SE, http://www.icos-sweden.se) as well as the European ICOS infrastructure. Lund University plays a central role within ICOS-SE.

PhD - Photonics

The Photonics laboratory at the Microtechnology and Nanoscience Department (MC2) is a dynamic and creative group with about 30 members working in an international and collaborative atmosphere. We perform both curiosity-driven and applied-research in the areas of optoelectronics, nanophotonics, and fiber optic systems. We enjoy a state-of-the-art laboratory for fiber-optic communications and have access to in-house clean-room facilities to manufacture photonic devices engineered at the nanoscale. Part of our recent research efforts focus on Next-generation optical communication systems featuring ultra-fast data rates (>1 Tb/s); Optical fiber amplifiers with world-record noise figures (1 dB); and ultra-high-repetition-rate (>10 GHz) optical frequency comb technology.
 
An optical frequency comb is typically produced by an ultrashort laser pulse train, whose spectrum consists of a series of discrete equidistant lines spanning over a broad bandwidth. The outstanding phase-noise performance of optical frequency combs has revolutionized the fields of optical synthesis and metrology. The applications of this Nobel-Prize-winning technology range from optical clocks to the synthesis of ultra-pure microwave signals. This project deals with the development of emerging and compact optical frequency comb platforms delivering ultra-high-repetition rates (10-100 GHz) and the study of their suitability for applications in optical communication systems. We will study two main platforms, i.e., electro-optic frequency comb generators made of lithium niobate modulators, and integrated silicon nitride microring resonators. The work is 50% experimental and 40% numerical modeling. It involves testing of chip devices, development of electro-optic comb generators and realization of applications. You will also have room to contribute with your own ideas. The PhD student position is limited to 4 years. The majority of your working time is devoted to your own research project. In addition, the position will normally include 10% departmental work, mostly teaching duties.

The research will be performed as a joint collaboration between one research group at the Division of Applied chemistry and another research group at the Division of Condensed matter physics. The Applied chemistry division carries out research in several areas within dry and wet surface chemistry and maintains a large activity in the area of nanomaterials research. The specific research group focuses on materials chemistry for energy and environmental applications with a special emphasis on nanostructured materials synthesis, structural characterisation and performance evaluation. The research group at Condensed matter physics has a very strong track record on spectroscopic characterisation and lithium battery research in general and in particular on the development of new materials concepts for lithium batteries.
 
The on-going electrification of the transport sector, the “electromobility” revolution, is a major driving force for energy storage breakthroughs. Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries have the potential to radically change the field of electric energy storage. However, progress is limited by the limited cyclability of Li-S batteries. In this postdoc project we want to address this “stability challenge” by developing new materials based on sulfur-functionalised mesoporous carbons. The postdoc position includes synthesis and structural characterisation of new carbon-based materials, preparation and testing of these materials in real batteries and studying degradation mechanisms in situ and ex situ using various spectroscopic techniques. The candidate is expected to carry out analysis of results and develop conceptual models that describe the results and to communicate results in oral as well as written form. The work will include collaborations with other researchers in the two different research groups as well as with other international and national partners of the two groups.
The Post-doctoral position is an appointment that offers an opportunity to qualify for further research positions within academia or industry. The majority of your working time is devoted to your own research, as a member of the two research groups. Included in your work is also to take part in supervision of Ph.D. students and M.Sc thesis students. Teaching of undergraduate students may also be included to a small extent.

Description

The department of astronomy at Stockholm University announces the availability of three fully funded, 4-year PhD student positions. The department consists of about 10 faculty, 10 postdocs, and more than 20 PhD students, with a large range of nationalities. Our research areas are both observational and theoretical and stretch from the Sun to the distant Universe. We host the Swedish Institute for Solar Physics and are part of the Oskar Klein and Stockholm Astrobiology Centers at Stockholm University. Stockholm is the capital of Sweden and is both a beautiful and lively city. English is commonly used both at the department and in daily life. The three positions will be in the following fields:

1) Solar Physics (observational),
2) Supernova studies (theoretical & observational)
3) Galaxy formation & evolution (observational). Applicants will be considered for all three subjects, but are welcome to indicate a preference.
