Description

Since 1959 the GFD program has promoted an exchange of ideas among researchers from distinct fields that share a common interest in the nonlinear dynamics of fluid flows in oceanography, meteorology, geophysics, astrophysics, applied mathematics, engineering and physics.
The program is organized around a ten-week course of study and research with an overall philosophy of bringing together researchers from a variety of backgrounds to provide a discussion of concepts spanning different disciplines, and thereby creating an intense research experience. Fellows complete a mentored research project. The Program commences with two weeks of Principal Lectures. The 2014 theme is "*Climate Physics and Dynamics*".Lectures on "*Water, Radiation, and Convection in the Climate System*" will be given by Kerry Emanuel (MIT) and on "*Large Scale Dynamics in the Atmosphere and Ocean*" by Geoffrey Vallis (Exeter).

PostDoc - Fluid dynamics

Description

We are looking for an excellent, motivated, self-driven post-doctoral researcher to work in the area of fluid dynamics. The position is for 24 months and located at the Department of Applied Mechanics, division of Fluid Dynamics. The research project is devoted to research on reduction of skin friction of marine transport by use of advanced surface coatings. The postdoctoral fellow will take care on CFD calculations and participate in experimental studies in cooperation with another post-doc. Present project focuses on measurements and simulations of the boundary layer flow. The measurements will be conducted in our own small-scale rig with PIV (particle image velocimetry). The CFD studies will be conducted with ANSYS Fluent and CFX. Your major responsibility as postdoc is to perform your own research in a research group. The position also includes teaching on undergraduate and master's levels as well as supervising master's and/or PhD students to a certain extent. Another important aspect involves collaboration within academia and with society at large. The position is meritorious for future research duties within academia as well as industry/the public sector.

Requirements

To qualify for the position of postdoc, you must have a doctoral degree in fluid dynamics by the start of the appointment (2013-11-04); the degree should generally not be older than three years. You are expected to be somewhat accustomed to teaching, and to demonstrate good potential within research and education. You are expected to work independently and to be able to supervise/co-supervise PhD and Master’s students. The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in Swedish and English. If Swedish is not your native language, you should be able to teach in Swedish on undergraduate level after two years. Chalmers offers Swedish courses.
