The Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management, Faculty of Science at University of Copenhagen is offering a PhD scholarship in land change science commencing 01.05.2014 or as soon as possible thereafter.
 The position will contribute to the EU-FP7-funded project “Agroforestry that will advance rural development (AGFORWARD)”. The project offers unique opportunities for interdisciplinary cooperation around agroforestry systems in Europe within a group of researchers from 27 partner institutions.
 The PhD project aims to analyze the driving forces of land-use change and their impacts on the provision of ecosystem services in various agroforestry systems in Europe. With space for pursuing individual interests, the PhD project will:
·         contribute to a synthesis of the existing knowledge on the drivers of land-use change in European agroforestry systems.
·         identify the causal chain of land-use dynamics in agroforestry systems by evaluating existing data from various sources.
·         analyze the impacts of these land-use changes on a set of ecosystem services at landscape scale.

The IMPRS-gBGC located in Jena, Germany, offers fellowships to outstanding students interested in research on biogeochemical cycles in the Earth system. The school provides excellent research possibilities for students to obtain a PhD degree in a 3-years graduate program.
Successful applicants will be part of the International Max Planck Research School for Global Biogeochemical Cycles. Research at the school focuses on the distribution of elements essential to life and the climate among the components of the Earth system and the interaction between biosphere, atmosphere, lithosphere, land and oceans.

The Earth System Dynamics research group at the University of Tübingen, Germany, announces 4 PhD and 2 Postdoctoral positions associated with a new European Research Council (ERC) Consolidator project. The project is titled "EXTREME: EXtreme Tectonics and Rapid Erosion in Mountain Environments" and inves-tigates the interactions between paleoclimate, surface processes, and 3D subduction geometry at orogen syntaxes in the Himalaya, St. Elias Range (Alaska), Cascadia (Washington State), and Andes (Chile, Peru). Candidates with interests in one or more of the following 6 positions should apply:

1. Atmospheric general circulation modeling of paleoclimate during mountain topographic evolution.
2. 3D thermomechanical and surface process modeling of lithospheric deformation and erosion.
3-4. Cosmogenic nuclide determination of catchment erosion rates in the Cascadia and South American margins.
5-6. Fission track and (U-Th)/He thermochronometer determination of exhumation in the Cascadia and South American margins.
The research team will work together to quantify the deformation and erosion history of the study areas and the atmospheric, erosional, and geodynamic controls on their evolution. State of the art facilities for thermo-chronology, cosmogenic isotopes, and high performance cluster computing are available for the project.

DESCRIPTION OF BRANCH/GROUP/SECTION
The Alberta Geological Survey of the AER provides geoscience information and expertise to government, industry and the public in support of exploration, development and conservation of Alberta's energy, water and mineral resources. Located in Edmonton, the AGS has over 40 geologists, engineers, technologists and science specialists who map and model the geology and groundwater resources in Alberta, and provide advice on geological hazards. At the AGS, individuals have the opportunity to work on challenging projects of major importance to Albertans, work with advanced technology, stay current in their fields while making significant contributions to their communities of practice and work outdoors in various parts of Alberta.
The Quaternary Geology Section at the AGS is currently focused on providing near-surface stratigraphic frameworks as part of the Provincial Groundwater Inventory Program. This information is used in decision making on: land use planning; water resource management; oil and gas development; environmental monitoring requirements; enforcement of current regulations; and development of future energy and environmental policy and regulation.
PURPOSE OF ROLE:
To provide a major contribution to modelling the three-dimensional stratigraphic framework of the near-surface sediments of Alberta within a team working to establish the groundwater inventory of the province.
RESPONSIBILITIES/ DUTIES:
Apply geological principles and independent judgement, incorporating a thorough knowledge of near-surface geological processes to the three-dimensional deterministic modelling of near-surface sediments utilizing field observations, core, well log, geophysical (ground and airborne), petrophysical and engineering data.
Disseminate information and knowledge in geological reports, presentations and peer-reviewed journals in a manner that will maintain and enhance the scientific credibility of the Alberta Geological Survey and the Alberta Energy Regulator.
Contribute to the Provincial Groundwater Inventory project.
Participate in high priority projects to advance the understanding of Alberta's subsurface geology involving collaboration with scientists having a variety of specialties and affiliations.
Provide sound geological opinions to staff within various areas of the Energy Resources Conservation Board, particularly to those within the Geology, Environmental Sciences and Economics Branch.
Interact with peers in universities, provincial and federal government departments, and industry.
Develop and manage project databases and assess data quality for modelling purposes.

Requirements

Advanced university degree in Geology or related discipline (Ph.D. or M.Sc.) with a minimum of five years of related experience.
Extensive knowledge of sedimentary processes in glacial and non-glacial environments, and experience linking glacial geology, Quaternary history and groundwater research.
Advanced experience characterizing sedimentary heterogeneity using architectural element analysis.
Experience producing three-dimensional geological models (preferably in Petrel, RockWorks or ViewLog) and their application in helping manage water resources.
Demonstrated analytical, research and presentation skills combined with the ability to apply original thinking to resolve complex issues.
High degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills (preferably demonstrated by one or more publications).
Ability and willingness to undertake fieldwork.
Experience logging core and interpreting downhole geophysical logs an asset.
Ability to work in teams and provide leadership as needed.
Ability to meet deadlines and work well under pressure.

PostDoc - Biogeochemistry and salinity remote sensing

Description

The Laboratoire d'Océanographie et du Climat - Expérimentation et Approches Numériques (LOCEAN)/ Institut Pierre Simon Laplace (IPSL) invites applications for a 15 months, possibly renewable, postdoctoral position. The position is opened in the frame of the EU FP7 Carbochange (carbochange.b.uib.no) and of the European Space Agency SMOS+SOS (www.smos-sos.org) projects. The successful candidate will join a LOCEAN team which has a lead expertise in salinity remote sensing and air-sea CO2 fluxes. The research project aims at demonstrating the contribution of new satellite sea surface salinity, SSS, to other existing remotely sensed products (sea surface temperature, ocean colour, altimetry) for improving regional air-sea CO2 fluxes estimates.
The SMOS (Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity) mission launched in november 2009 has demonstrated the capability of the satellite L-band radiometry to sense SSS. Almost 4 years of SMOS SSS data are now available. The Aquarius satellite mission delivers SSS since more than 2 years. At 10 days-100x100km2 scale, the precision of the SMOS and Aquarius SSS is on the order of 0.2-0.3 in tropical and subtropical regions.
The estimate of the air-sea CO2 flux at regional scale, based on in situ measurements, is challenging due to the sparse measurements of the CO2 partial pressure at the ocean surface, pCO2. Hence the reliability of the estimated fluxes strongly relies on the methods used to extrapolate the in-situ pCO2 measurements. Satellite sea surface temperature and chlorophyll have been widely used in the past in such methods, as they contain information about physical and biological processes driving pCO2 variability. On another hand, several studies have shown that SSS brings complementary information, that could, in particular, help to understand and identify the processes which control the pCO2 signatures associated with various water masses and biogeochemical provinces. In this project, we propose to use the satellite SSS data, in conjunction with in situ pCO2 (in particular but not exclusively the ones available in the SOCAT data base), in regions well and accurately sampled by SMOS and by ship pCO2, for 1) interpreting the observed pCO2 variability, 2) developing new methodology for extrapolating pCO2 and 3) demonstrating the potential of new satellite SSS at improving air-sea CO2 flux estimates at regional scale.

Requirements 

Applicants should have a background in ocean biogeochemistry, and preferentially in ocean remote sensing. They should have significant experience in data processing.

The research themes are: Ocean and Climate, Geosphere-Biosphere Interactions and Sediment Dynamics.
MARUM is offering a PhD position in the field of paleoceanography. We are searching for highly motivated applicants with a strong background in stable isotope geochemistry and/or ocean modeling for a project with the topic: Deglacial changes in deep Atlantic stratification.
The aim of this project is to model changes in the Atlantic deep-water circulation during the last deglaciation with isotope-enabled models and to compare the results to foraminiferal stable isotope data. The study is directed towards a better understanding of interactions between water mass changes and the meridional overturning circulation of the Atlantic Ocean.

Requirements

Applicants should hold a M.Sc. or Diploma in Physics, Physical Oceanography, Geosciences or a related subject. Furthermore, they should have a strong interest in Quaternary paleoceanography. Excellent English speaking and writing skills are a prerequisite. Experience in scientific data analysis and programming is desirable.

The focus will be on understanding the drivers and manifestations of global climate change from the perspective of better understanding Earth’s climatic history through the Cenozoic Era and its value as a window to the processes and impacts of ongoing and future climate trends. 

Requirements

The candidate should prioritize the documentation and interpretation of novel past climatic records, and the desired expertise includes, but is not limited to, a geochemist/climatologist who studies high-resolution records of Cenozoic climate change spanning time scales from decades up to tens of millions of years, including archives on land, lakes and/or in the ocean. PostDoc - Geoscience (LA-ICP-MS and ICP-OES analysis)

The Department of Geology at Trinity College Dublin, Ireland, immediately seeks applicants for a postdoctoral fellowship in split-stream ICP-MS and ICP-OES UV-laser ablation applied to igneous processes and mineral mapping.
We are particularly interested in:
Developing spilt-stream LA-ICP-OES and MS analysis for effective micro-chemical mapping of geological materials; expand existing Iolite data reduction schemes to combine signals from the OES and MS; develop analytical protocols for LA-ICP-OES analysis of halogens in minerals and volcanic glass; to work towards 3D microchemical mapping.

Requirements

Demonstrated ability of ICP-MS data processing and a peer-reviewed publication record are advantageous. The Department has a newly installed Thermo iCAP Qs ICP-MS, is in the process of installing a Spectro ARCOS ICP-OES and operates a Photon Machines Analyte Excite ArF Excimer laser facility (http://www.tcd.ie/Geology/geochemfacility/). The Institute of Earth Sciences of the University of Graz, Austria invites applications for a PhD position in Freshwater Palaeoecology within the project "Biogeography, ecology and taxonomy of the Neotropical ostracod Cytheridella" funded by the Austrian Sciences Fond (FWF).
The project aims at investigations of interrelationships between phenotypic variability, geographical distribution, and environmental conditions of the common Neotropical freshwater ostracod genus Cytheridella. Therefore we intend to analyse intraspecific morphological variability within and between populations in relation to ecological conditions, various habitats and site specific geochemical signatures. This actualistic approach will provide essential information which can be applied to fossil Cytheridella populations.
The successful candidate will be responsible for a variety of topics, including microfossil preparation, stable isotope measurements, data management and interpretation, and assistance during field work.

We are looking for an enthusiastic ecologist with a strong and proven interest in (palaeo)biology, geochemistry (i.e., stable isotopes), hydrochemistry, and freshwater ecosystems. PhD - Development and optimisation of separation processes for heavy rare earths

The Industrial Materials Recycling group, included into the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, carries out research in material recycling and development of new recycling methods. Current projects concern recovery of metals from spent batteries, CIGS solar cells, low energy lamps, flat screens, paint residues and waste combustion ash. The group consists of 5 senior scientists, 4 postdocs and 10 PhD students and works together with the Nuclear Chemistry group which means a good availability of advanced analytical methods.
Project: "Development and optimisation of separation processes for heavy rare earths". Objectives: Development of extractants for solvent extraction separation of heavy rare earths from magnet leachates & Development and assessment of new environmentally friendly extractants for REE separation.
Your major responsibilities as PhD student is to pursue your own doctoral studies. You are expected to develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing, both in Swedish and in English. The position generally also includes teaching on Chalmers' undergraduate level or performing other duties corresponding to 20 per cent of working hours.
To carry out the research project assigned to him/her To take the compulsory courses of PhD students at Chalmers and additional doctoral courses corresponding to 30 points for a licentiate degree and 60 points for a PhD degree.To take part in the activities of the EREAN network. Requirements

To qualify as a PhD student, you must have a master's level degree corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering. The applicant for ESR8 should be strong in organic chemistry, synthesis and analytical methods.
The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in Swedish and English. If Swedish is not your native language, you should be able to teach in Swedish after two years. Chalmers offers Swedish courses.
English language: It is a requirement that network fellows will show that their ability to understand and express themselves in both written and spoken English is sufficiently high for them to derive the full benefit from the networktraining.
Conditions of international mobility of researchers: Researchers are required to undertake trans-national mobility (i.e. move from one country to another) when taking up the appointment. At the time of selection by the host organisation, researchers must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of their host organisation for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to their recruitment. Short stays, such as holidays, are not taken into account.

The position is fully funded for three years with the possibility of extension for one additional year. The PhD research project will focus on glacier dynamics and erosion. The project involves modeling and/or fieldwork. We currently have ongoing projects in the European Alps and Southern Alps of New Zealand.

Requirements

Applicants should have a Masters degree in geology, geophysics, physics, engineering, applied mathematics or any related quantitative discipline. Some interest in glaciology or quantitative geomorphology is essential. A strong command of written and spoken English is required and, although not critical, an understanding of French is an advantage. Some programming experience would be appreciated.

Postdoctoral position available immediately for geochemical investigations of Archean drill cores and modern samples of stromatolites and microbial mats.
The candidate will be based part time at IPGP (downtown Paris, 5th district) and part time at SOLEIL, which is located about 1 hour south of Paris by public transportation. IPGP is large and very diverse scientifically with more than 150 faculty members and 150 PhD's and postdoctorates from various nationalities. SOLEIL is a fully international environment with more than 350 faculty positions and postdocs.

Requirements

Applicants should have a PhD in Earth Sciences (geochemistry, mineralogy, Archean geobiology). A good background in Physics is recommended but not mandatory. This position is funded for one year renewable another year.
