Postdoctoral Researcher in Water Sustainability and Climate: Water, land use and climate change in an urbanizing agricultural region.
A two-year postdoctoral researcher position is available with the Water Sustainability and Climate (WSC) research group at the University of Wisconsin-Madison as part of a five-year project funded by the National Science Foundation. The position will be co-supervised by Drs. Chris Kucharik and Steve Loheide. This position is focused on using an agroecosystem model (Agro-IBIS) coupled to a groundwater flow model (MODFLOW) to investigate the impacts of changing land use, land cover and climate on hydrology and other related ecosystem services of the Yahara Watershed in southern Wisconsin. Therefore, this position requires strong background in ecohydrology, with preference to those with previous experience in groundwater flow modeling and modeling the connections between groundwater and land surface processes. The scientific goals of this two-year postdoctoral position are: (1) complete development and calibration of the newly developed Agro-IBIS-MODFLOW (AIM) model for the Yahara Watershed, and (2) use this new modeling approach to examine the impacts of changing climate and land use/cover on flows of water, N, and P through the watershed using a series of integrated scenarios that portray several pathways of change out to the year 2070.

DESCRIPTION OF BRANCH/GROUP/SECTION
The Alberta Geological Survey of the AER provides geoscience information and expertise to government, industry and the public in support of exploration, development and conservation of Alberta's energy, water and mineral resources. Located in Edmonton, the AGS has over 40 geologists, engineers, technologists and science specialists who map and model the geology and groundwater resources in Alberta, and provide advice on geological hazards. At the AGS, individuals have the opportunity to work on challenging projects of major importance to Albertans, work with advanced technology, stay current in their fields while making significant contributions to their communities of practice and work outdoors in various parts of Alberta.
The Quaternary Geology Section at the AGS is currently focused on providing near-surface stratigraphic frameworks as part of the Provincial Groundwater Inventory Program. This information is used in decision making on: land use planning; water resource management; oil and gas development; environmental monitoring requirements; enforcement of current regulations; and development of future energy and environmental policy and regulation.
PURPOSE OF ROLE:
To provide a major contribution to modelling the three-dimensional stratigraphic framework of the near-surface sediments of Alberta within a team working to establish the groundwater inventory of the province.
RESPONSIBILITIES/ DUTIES:
Apply geological principles and independent judgement, incorporating a thorough knowledge of near-surface geological processes to the three-dimensional deterministic modelling of near-surface sediments utilizing field observations, core, well log, geophysical (ground and airborne), petrophysical and engineering data.
Disseminate information and knowledge in geological reports, presentations and peer-reviewed journals in a manner that will maintain and enhance the scientific credibility of the Alberta Geological Survey and the Alberta Energy Regulator.
Contribute to the Provincial Groundwater Inventory project.
Participate in high priority projects to advance the understanding of Alberta's subsurface geology involving collaboration with scientists having a variety of specialties and affiliations.
Provide sound geological opinions to staff within various areas of the Energy Resources Conservation Board, particularly to those within the Geology, Environmental Sciences and Economics Branch.
Interact with peers in universities, provincial and federal government departments, and industry.
Develop and manage project databases and assess data quality for modelling purposes.

Requirements

Advanced university degree in Geology or related discipline (Ph.D. or M.Sc.) with a minimum of five years of related experience.
Extensive knowledge of sedimentary processes in glacial and non-glacial environments, and experience linking glacial geology, Quaternary history and groundwater research.
Advanced experience characterizing sedimentary heterogeneity using architectural element analysis.
Experience producing three-dimensional geological models (preferably in Petrel, RockWorks or ViewLog) and their application in helping manage water resources.
Demonstrated analytical, research and presentation skills combined with the ability to apply original thinking to resolve complex issues.
High degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills (preferably demonstrated by one or more publications).
Ability and willingness to undertake fieldwork.
Experience logging core and interpreting downhole geophysical logs an asset.
Ability to work in teams and provide leadership as needed.
Ability to meet deadlines and work well under pressure.

MARUM is offering a PhD position in the field of paleoceanography. We are searching for highly motivated applicants with a strong background in stable isotope geochemistry and/or ocean modeling for a project with the topic: Deglacial changes in deep Atlantic stratification.
The aim of this project is to model changes in the Atlantic deep-water circulation during the last deglaciation with isotope-enabled models and to compare the results to foraminiferal stable isotope data. The study is directed towards a better understanding of interactions between water mass changes and the meridional overturning circulation of the Atlantic Ocean.

Requirements

Applicants should hold a M.Sc. or Diploma in Physics, Physical Oceanography, Geosciences or a related subject. Furthermore, they should have a strong interest in Quaternary paleoceanography. The EEWRC aims to explore issues of global significance in the fields of energy, environmental and water research, with a focus on their specific regional, East-Mediterranean manifestations. Its research agenda addresses the great challenges related to: the mitigation and adaptation strategies necessitated by climate change, a reduced dependence on hydrocarbon energy sources and achieving a low carbon economy through the employment of renewables (solar) and enabling a sustainable management of water and other natural resources in arid and semi-arid environments.
The Cyprus Institute (CyI) invites applications for a Post-doctoral Fellow in Water Management at its Energy, Environment and Water Research Center (EEWRC). The successful candidate will join a dynamic team of researchers, who are investigating all aspects of hydrology and water management in semi-arid environments under changing economic and climate conditions.
The Post-doctoral Fellow will analyse and map different water and land management practices and climate change adaptation options, conduct policy analyses, and operationalize the concept of ecosystems services. He or she will also be responsible for all stakeholder interactions in two new EU funded projects (BEWATER and RECARE).
The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Analyse and map costs, benefits and trade-offs of water and land management practices and climate change adaptation options.
  • Facilitate communications between science and society in the area of environmental management and climate change adaptation, and mobilize formal and non-formal institutions.
  • Operationalize the concept of ecosystems services in close cooperation with stakeholders.

Requirements

PhD - Isotope geochemistry

MARUM is offering a PhD position in the area of isotope geochemistry in the framework of the MARUM project GB4: From element and energy fluxes to vent ecosystems.
The PhD project will combine radiogenic and stable isotopes to identify the source and pathways of hydrothermal vent fluids and to determine the energy and elemental flow. Specifically, boron and lithium isotopes in hydrothermal fluids, oceanic crust and precipitates will be analysed to identify the full range of fluid composition, pathway and sources beneath hydrothermal vents and to reconstruct the associated energy and elemental flow from lithosphere to hydrosphere and biosphere. Parallel investigations of strontium isotopes offer the potential to reconstruct mixing processes between hydrothermal fluids and seawater, and to assess heat-flow migration and chemical mass balances. We are searching for an enthusiastic and dynamic young researcher with a strong interest in analytical chemistry. The PhD student will be part of the research groups “Isotope Geochemistry” and “Petrology of the Ocean Crust” at MARUM and the Faculty of Geosciences, University of Bremen.

PhD - Polarimetric SAR images for fuel moisture mapping

Funded Ph.D. position for working on the use of polarimetric SAR images for fuel moisture mapping
We are seeking a highly motivated Ph.D. student who will work on calibrating a physics-based model to map the drought code of the Canadian Fire Weather Index from polarimetric SAR images. The model follows the method of Jagdhuber et al. 2011. (Proc. 5th Int. Workshop PolInSAR 2011, Frascati, Italy). The Ph.D. thesis will be based on data acquired over Canadian/South African natural grasslands, Alaska boreal forests and Canadian tundras.
The Ph.D. work will be supervised by Prof. Brigitte Leblon, (University of New Brunswick, Canada), Prof. Joseph Buckley (Royal Military College, Canada), Dr. Thomas Jagdhuber (DLR, Germany) and Dr. Laura Bourgeau-Chavez (Michigan Tech Research Institute, USA). Thereby, the hired student will be invited to travel among the various laboratories during his Ph.D. thesis. The study is a part of research project recently funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC).

Requirements

Preference will be given to Canadian, US or European students because the candidate will be invited to do some thesis work at DLR (Germany) and MTRI (USA), but international students are encouraged to apply.
Applicants should have successfully completed an MSc and have a strong background in radar remote sensing, strong interest in computer coding, with interest in fire sciences.
It is critical the applicant has some ability to program computer code to facilitate data analysis, model development and implementation as well as good writing and oral skills.

Description

The Hydrogeology Group at the Institute of Applied Geosciences, Technische Universität Darmstadt in Germany, is seeking two highly motivated PhD students (Hydrogeology/Environmental Sciences) willing to be actively involved in a recently funded FP7 Project, MARSOL, which deals with managed aquifer recharge (MAR) as a solution to combat water scarcity in Mediterranean regions. For this, several pilot sites - distributed within the Circum-Mediterranean - have been selected where different MAR techniques will be studied.
The PhD tasks will include principally the development of the groundwater model (both for the saturated and unsaturated zone) for the Lavrion site located in S. Greece (Athens region). Some field work can also be expected, but the main data collection will be conducted by the local partners.
The Lavrion site involves the employment of infiltration basins which will be using waters of impaired quality as a recharge source. This system is complemented by new technological developments, which will provide continuous monitoring of the quantitative and qualitative characteristics of infiltrating groundwater through all hydrologic zones (i.e. surface, unsaturated and saturated zone) and in different aquifer types (karst and granular). The model developed will provide a tool to:

  • Demonstrate the potential of the unsaturated zone to geo-purify waters of impaired quality during infiltration by continuous monitoring with tailored sensors and techniques.
  • Demonstrate the feasibility of MAR to combat seawater intrusion and water scarcity in coastal karst aquifers.
  • Evaluate the system's performance to maintain effective infiltration rates with special focus on precipitation/clogging processes through advanced monitoring schemes.
  • Show the potential quantitative and qualitative impact of MAR on the groundwater system by modelling the hydrological processes in the vadose zone and the groundwater.
Requirements

Candidates must hold a Master degree in related disciplines and have a background on groundwater modeling, programming skills with common programming languages such as Fortran, C++, or Matlab are an asset, as well as some knowledge of GIS. Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English are required.

Multi-scale Hydrology and Processes group (MHP), Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Pennsylvania State University (PSU) welcomes applications for a postdoctoral research associate position in multi-scale hydrologic and biogeochemical modeling in the tropical Amazon. The selected candidate will focus on implementing a multi-scale modeling framework based on an existing coupling of the Process-based Adaptive Watershed Simulator (PAWS) and the Community Land Model (CLM). The research associates will use the modeling system to study the influence of climate change on the interactions between hydrologic and carbon cycles.

Requirements

We look for highly-motivated candidates with strong backgrounds in numerical modeling, hydrology and/or biogeochemistry, and analysis of complex coupled terrestrial ecosystem processes.

The Institute of Earth Sciences of the University of Graz, Austria invites applications for a PhD position in Freshwater Palaeoecology within the project "Biogeography, ecology and taxonomy of the Neotropical ostracod Cytheridella" funded by the Austrian Sciences Fond (FWF).
The project aims at investigations of interrelationships between phenotypic variability, geographical distribution, and environmental conditions of the common Neotropical freshwater ostracod genus Cytheridella. Therefore we intend to analyse intraspecific morphological variability within and between populations in relation to ecological conditions, various habitats and site specific geochemical signatures. This actualistic approach will provide essential information which can be applied to fossil Cytheridella populations.
The successful candidate will be responsible for a variety of topics, including microfossil preparation, stable isotope measurements, data management and interpretation, and assistance during field work.

We are looking for an enthusiastic ecologist with a strong and proven interest in (palaeo)biology, geochemistry (i.e., stable isotopes), hydrochemistry, and freshwater ecosystems. You will work on a new project funded by the UK Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) - Radiation and the Environment (RATE) programme. RATE aims to make major contributions to enhancing environmental protection and safeguarding human health from releases of radioactivity from nuclear power plants, waste repositories and legacy-contaminated sites. Leeds is part of a consortium project entitled "Hydromechanical and biogeochemical processes in fractured rock masses in the vicinity of a geological disposal facility for radioactive waste". Your role will focus on forward modeling the effects of fractures on seismic wave propagation to inform survey designs for repositories. 

Requirements

You will have a PhD either in seismology, geophysics, physics, applied mathematics, engineering, or a closely related area. You should be familiar with elastic wave theory, mechanics of fractures, and numerical modelling techniques. Strong computer programming skills and prior development of numerical models will be a major asset. You will require good communication skills and the ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team environment. The Institute of Geophysics Polish Academy of Sciences (IGF PAS) is a multidisciplinary organization engaged in advanced research, teaching and service provision in cutting-edge geophysical sciences and is one of the largest research centres in Poland working towards understanding and monitoring the environment. The Hydrology and Hydrodynamics department focuses on the transport and mixing of contaminants in surface waters, flood wave transformation and flood risk, water resources management, assessment of the impact of climate change from theoretical and experimental perspectives. 
The successful applicant will work with a team of researchers based in Poland and in Norway to advance our current understanding of likely changes in hydrological extremes under a future climate.The focus of the position will be on the use of simulated data derived from a series of linked climate and hydrological models and analyses.

The department conducts teaching and research across the full range of the solid Earth and environmental Earth sciences, with activities in almost all areas of geology, geochemistry, geophysics, biogeology and hydrogeology. The department hosts an international tenured staff of over 45 scientists and more than 100 PhD students and postdoctoral researchers. The Department of Earth Sciences is currently looking for an postdoc in geochemistry. Project title: "Response of global biogeochemical cycles to climate-induced changes in the hydrological cycle".
The project is one of 7 postdoc projects in a larger programme that investigates "The future global water cycle". Utrecht University initiated the programme to answer the key question: "How will changes in the global water cycle govern future conditions on planet Earth?" This question relates to understanding and projecting how human activities and climate change will influence water scarcity and abundance and indirectly impact food security, flood risk, human health, socio-economic development and biodiversity. The programme involves the three UU-faculties of Geosciences, Sciences, and Law, Economics & Governance.

Requirements

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with a Ph.D. degree in Geochemistry relevant to the above fields, an excellent publication record, proven analytical and modelling skills, and a positive attitude to interdisciplinary research and team work. We are specifically looking for excellent candidates with a CV and the writing skills (in English) to be competitive in applying for additional funding during the period of your employment. The candidate must be able and willing to help in supervision of BSC-, MSc- and PhD-students.

Graduate Hydrogeologist

Norfolk County Council is looking to appoint a Graduate Hydrogeologist to join its Closed Landfill Team. This team is responsible for the management of up to 152 closed landfill sites of which 30 are currently monitored and 7 have Environmental Permits.
In this varied role you will support the Hydrogeologist who is responsible for monitoring and assessing the effects on groundwater, surface water, and managing the leachate source of the closed landfill sites, for which the County Council has responsibility.
The role provides the opportunity of a mix of office and site based work and working alongside those responsible for the engineering, leachate and gas aspects of landfill management.
You will assist the Hydrogeologist on tasks including the collation, interpretation and distribution of monitoring data. Duties also include undertaking environmental assessments and groundwater modelling, site investigation, groundwater remediation and groundwater analysis. In addition you will provide groundwater advice to other parts of the Council and Local Authorities.

Requirements

You will possess an Earth Science degree with a specialism in groundwater and ideally a Masters degree in Hydrogeology. You will be IT literate with excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build strong working relationships with stakeholders and team members. The nature of the role requires you to travel to venues not accessible on public transport routes.
