PhD - Biogeochemistry

Description

The successful candidate will be involved primarily in a field experiment aimed at understanding the interactions between nutrient, water availability and carbon fluxes. The objective of the PhD work is to gain further understanding on the role and interaction of water/nutrient (N and P) availability in determining CO2 and water fluxes, water use efficiency, and their temporal variability at ecosystem level by combining eddy covariance with a manipulation experiment and terrestrial biosphere models. The field sites are located in Spain, with periodic visits during planned field campaigns and activities. The knowledge of a programming language or/and the experience with process-based terrestrial biosphere models will be considered an added value.
The position will be at the Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry (Jena, Germany) in the Biosphere-Atmosphere Interactions and Experimentation Group, Biogeochemical Integration Department (http://www.bgc-jena.mpg.de/bgi/index.php/Main/HomePage).
The PhD Student will join an international team in a vibrant research environment. The successful applicant will be also encouraged to apply for admission to the International Max Planck Research School for Global Biogeochemical Cycles. PhD - Isotope geo and cosmochemistry

The Isotope Geochemistry Group at the Department of Earth Sciences

Description

The PhD project includes geochemical and isotopic investigations to evaluate the processes in the early solar system that led to the formation of the earth's moon. The projects will involve the development of new analytical techniques to set up novel stable isotope systems. The review of applications will begin on 15 November until the position is filled. The PhD position will be offered for 3 years with a possible 1 year extension, starting within the next 6 months.
The project is suitable for students with a background in geology, chemistry, physics, planetary sciences or equivalent experience. The student will be trained in cutting-edge analytical work (incl. clean room chemistry and multi-collector ICP-MS) carried out at the state-of-the-art geochemical facilities at the ETH Zurich. These techniques have numerous applications across the range of analytical sciences.

PostDoc - Geoscience (LA-ICP-MS and ICP-OES analysis)

Description

The Department of Geology at Trinity College Dublin, Ireland, immediately seeks applicants for a postdoctoral fellowship in split-stream ICP-MS and ICP-OES UV-laser ablation applied to igneous processes and mineral mapping.
We are particularly interested in:
Developing spilt-stream LA-ICP-OES and MS analysis for effective micro-chemical mapping of geological materials; expand existing Iolite data reduction schemes to combine signals from the OES and MS; develop analytical protocols for LA-ICP-OES analysis of halogens in minerals and volcanic glass; to work towards 3D microchemical mapping.

Requirements

Demonstrated ability of ICP-MS data processing and a peer-reviewed publication record are advantageous. The Department has a newly installed Thermo iCAP Qs ICP-MS, is in the process of installing a Spectro ARCOS ICP-OES and operates a Photon Machines Analyte Excite ArF Excimer laser facility (http://www.tcd.ie/Geology/geochemfacility/). Completion of a PhD. is preferred, although highly qualified applicants nearing the end of a Ph.D. will be considered. Experience in LA-ICP-MS is essential.

PostDoc - Geochemical investigations

Description

Postdoctoral position available immediately for geochemical investigations of Archean drill cores and modern samples of stromatolites and microbial mats.
The candidate will be based part time at IPGP (downtown Paris, 5th district) and part time at SOLEIL, which is located about 1 hour south of Paris by public transportation. IPGP is large and very diverse scientifically with more than 150 faculty members and 150 PhD's and postdoctorates from various nationalities. SOLEIL is a fully international environment with more than 350 faculty positions and postdocs.

Requirements

Applicants should have a PhD in Earth Sciences (geochemistry, mineralogy, Archean geobiology). A good background in Physics is recommended but not mandatory. This position is funded for one year renewable another year.
