Microsoft research grants - 2 vacancies

Description

BSC under the collaboration agreement with Microsoft Research are conducting research and development projects in the area of new multicore architectures and Cluster systems in order to work together to foster an environment where industrial, academic, and research personnel can collaborate to use state of the art computational systems and technologies in support of such research projects. We are opening 2 Research Grants Positions to work on the characterization and simulation of MapReduce environments. The position will be located at BSC within the Computer Science department. The grant will have an initial length of 6 months, which may be extended base on the performance of the candidates and the results of the project. The project will be a joint effort with a team of researchers from Microsoft Redmond. The project may also fit the work of a Master Thesis. Candidates must be interested in starting a research career in the scope of an international team. Main Responsibilities:

- Characterization of MapReduce workloads in different hardware platforms (Ethernet, Infiniband, Rotational Disks, Solid State Disks, CPUs, #cores?) and different workloads
- Evaluation of performance bottleneck under different conditions
- Development of event-driven simulation tools for complex environments

Requirements

- Excellent computing skills in high level computer languages (especially Java) and experience with UNIX/LINUX and
- Windows environments and scripting languages
- Strong Knowledge of Apache Hadoop, Pig, and/or Hive
- Strong Knowledge of Network Protocols and High Performance Networks (Infiniband, RDMA)
- Knowledge of application and development of Cloud Computing applications
- Fluency in English essential: regular written and spoken communication in English will be required
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to take initiative, prioritize and work under set deadlines and pressure
- Ability to work independently and in a team
- Holding or pursuing a M.Sc Degree in Computer Sciences, Telecommunications or related discipline
- Capacity to interact and build strong relations with a diverse members/stakeholder/staff base.
- Willing to travel
