Description

 

The UWICORE laboratory is leading the project OPPORTUNITIES, a nationally funded research project working in the area of multi-hop cellular networks with mobile relays (MCN-MR). MCN-MR integrate cellular and ad-hoc technologies through the use of mobile relaying techniques in order to improve the system capacity and user-perceived QoS by substituting long-distance cellular links with various multi-hop transmissions with improved link budgets. To this aim, MCN-MR technologies would use the mobile terminals communications and computing capabilities in an opportunistic and collaborative operational framework. In this context, the project OPPORTUNITIES is investigating contextual, adaptive and opportunistic communications and networking techniques to improve the reliability and energy/resources efficiency of mobile relaying schemes in MCN systems. In addition to analytical and simulation research work, the project has a strong experimental focus. The Ubiquitous Wireless Communications Research (UWICORE, www.uwicore.umh.es) laboratory is part of the Communications Engineering Department of the Miguel Hernandez University of Elche in Spain. UWICORE is a very active Spanish research laboratory with close links with national and international industry. Its research activities are focused in: multi-hop cellular networks, vehicular communications and networks, heterogeneous wireless systems, and wireless system design and optimization. The laboratory has also strong expertise in the implementation of research hardware and software testbeds. UWICORE is looking to hire two Research Engineers to work on the OPPORTUNITIES project. Ideally, the candidates would be interested in conducting a PhD, although this requirement is not mandatory. Currently, the CTTC is interested in filling the following post-doctoral position in access technologies:

 

Access Technologies (Ref. 5/2012-1, 1 position): The post-doctoral researcher is expected to pursue fundamental research on several aspects of wireless Professional Mobile Radio (PMR) communications related with the EC-funded project ICT-EMPhAtiC that CTTC leads; should have knowledge on the specification of current cellular-type mobile communication systems (LTE and/or WiMAX), plus strong publication record in scheduling and RRM techniques for cellular systems, relay networks (single/multiple relays, possibly multi-user), and two-way relaying. Expertise and/or strong publication record in optimization tools such as Lagrangian-based, interior point methods, subgradient and dual decomposition methods is highly appreciated. Good writing skills in English and ability to integrate in a multi-disciplinary team are of interest, as well.

Technologies for 3D cloud

The research program aims to analyze and develop technologies able to support the creation of Cloud computing Infrastructures that allow user to get take advantage of interactive 3D "legacy" applications provided by the model SaaS (Software as a Service). These applications are basically visualization tools, CAD software, 3D interactive applications, and so on. The research program activities will be therefore related to design and develop enabling and integrated technologies able to extend the Cloud Computing paradigm to efficiently support and host interactive 3D applications (3D cloud). In particular, the program will be focused on three main topics:

 

(i) technologies for virtualization and sharing of hardware graphics resources (GPUs),

(ii) remote visualization of 3D applications

The Music Technology Group of the Universitat Pompeu Fabra is a leading research group with more than 40 researchers, carrying out research on topics such as audio signal processing, sound and music description, musical interfaces, sound and music communities, and performance modeling. The MTG wants to contribute to the improvement of the information and communication technologies related to sound and music, carrying out competitive research at the international level and at the same time transferring its results to society. To that goal, the MTG aims at finding a balance between basic and applied research while promoting interdisciplinary approaches that incorporate knowledge from both scientific/technological and humanistic/artistic disciplines.

 

This position will involve working together with researchers at the MTG-UPF in Barcelona to (1) maintain a multiplatform software infrastructure related to audio signal processing and music information processing and (2) implement novel algorithms for processing and interacting with music related data.

Intelligent Energy (Ref. 4/2012-2, 1 position): The candidate must hold a Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering or related disciplines, should have implementation and practical experience in the area of wireless communications for smart grids, and be motivated and team player. Networks Researcher

The COMPOSE project aims at enabling new services that can seamlessly integrate real and virtual worlds through the convergence of the Internet of Services with the Internet of Things. COMPOSE will achieve this through the provisioning of an open and scalable marketplace infrastructure, in which smart objects are associated to services that can be combined, managed, and integrated in a standardised way to easily and quickly build innovative applications. COMPOSE will allow for novel combined management of object generated data (from the object data store) and real time streams. The user applications will be able to decide what kind of combination is required for each service, and will be specified using high level languages. Within the COMPOSE project, BSC will research large-scale data management for the Internet of Things, combining real-time object-generated data streams with historic data. All data in COMPOSE will be managed using a Key/Value model, from real time and in memory databases, to persistent data stores. BSC contribution to COMPOSE will allow for flexible data management strategies driven by service needs and will respond and adapt to high-level requirements imposed by services. We are opening 2 Junior Researcher Positions. Candidates must be interested in starting a research career and pursuing a PhD degree in the scope of an international team.
