Development of energy models

Description

One key activity within the Montblanc project is the development of performance and energy models to guide the design of the final HPC architecture. At BSC we have implemented a micro-benchmark infrastructure named BeGet/POTRA, to design and implement micro-benchmarks that help researchers to understand and improve the performance and energy consumption levels. Micro-benchmarks are used to stress particular components of the architecture, and then build models that can be used as predictors of the performance and energy consumption levels. We are opening a research position to continue this development, extend the current knowledge on micro-benchmark generation and the performance and energy modelling techniques. The position offers the possibility to enter in contact with cutting edge technology and HPC technology providers such as ARM or Bull. Candidates must be interested in starting a research career and pursuing a PhD degree in the scope of an international team. Main Responsibilities:

Description

 

The UWICORE laboratory is leading the project OPPORTUNITIES, a nationally funded research project working in the area of multi-hop cellular networks with mobile relays (MCN-MR). MCN-MR integrate cellular and ad-hoc technologies through the use of mobile relaying techniques in order to improve the system capacity and user-perceived QoS by substituting long-distance cellular links with various multi-hop transmissions with improved link budgets. To this aim, MCN-MR technologies would use the mobile terminals communications and computing capabilities in an opportunistic and collaborative operational framework. In this context, the project OPPORTUNITIES is investigating contextual, adaptive and opportunistic communications and networking techniques to improve the reliability and energy/resources efficiency of mobile relaying schemes in MCN systems. In addition to analytical and simulation research work, the project has a strong experimental focus. The Ubiquitous Wireless Communications Research (UWICORE, www.uwicore.umh.es) laboratory is part of the Communications Engineering Department of the Miguel Hernandez University of Elche in Spain. UWICORE is a very active Spanish research laboratory with close links with national and international industry. Its research activities are focused in: multi-hop cellular networks, vehicular communications and networks, heterogeneous wireless systems, and wireless system design and optimization. The laboratory has also strong expertise in the implementation of research hardware and software testbeds. UWICORE is looking to hire two Research Engineers to work on the OPPORTUNITIES project. Ideally, the candidates would be interested in conducting a PhD, although this requirement is not mandatory. Computational modeller of tissue dynamics

Description

The Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG) is a multidisciplinary research centre created in December 2000, and located in the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park (PRBB). CRG scientific groups focus on understanding the complexity of life from the genome to the cell to a whole organism, and its interaction with the environment, supported by cutting-edge technologies. The successful applicant will join a team of international research project managers, and will have opportunities to work with excellent scientists from different fields in life sciences. CRG has a highly international culture, and the working language is English. The position will involve creating 2D and 3D dynamical models of spatial-patterning phenomena, including reaction-diffusion systems, gene regulatory networks and tissue growth. The project will focus on the arrangement of different tissue types within the lymph node, and the emergence of the skeletal pattern within the developing limb bud. The project involves inhouse software for finite-volume simulations, and thus requires good programming skills.

PhD - High-performance algorithms for processing genomic data

Description

 

The CNAG (www.cnag.eu) started operating in March 2010 and is aimed to carry out large-scale DNA sequence analysis projects in human and other species in collaboration with researchers in Catalonia, Spain and internationally. The CNAG operates ten Illumina HiSeq2000 sequencers and has a dedicated 13 Tflop compute cluster with a 2 petabyte disk storage array, becoming one of the major Genome Sequencing Centers in Europe. The Ph.D. will take place within the Algorithm Development team, whose mission is to design and deploy practical methods to process the hundreds of gigabases of DNA sequencing data produced daily by the Center. The CNAG seeks a talented young student that is expected to establish, under the supervision of Dr. Ribeca, a research line focused on the development of high-performance algorithms for the processing of genomic data, with particular emphasis on their implementation and deployment on FPGA-based hardware architectures.

 

PostDoc - Urban mobility

A 1+1 years postdoctoral position is available at IFISC. The candidate is expected to work within the framework of the EC project EUNOIA with the aim of analyzing and modeling urban mobility patterns. The partners participating in EUNOIA include academic institutions: UCL, ETH and CEA as well as IFISC, the city hall of Barcelona and companies as Nommon. Other industrial partners participating as external collaborators include BBVA and Telefonica. The selected candidate will work in collaboration with Prof. Maxi San Miguel, Dr. Victor M. Eguiluz and Dr. Jose J. Ramasco. The topics of the work will be marked by the objectives of EUNOIA, which include the analysis of electronic information regarding human mobility, the use of agent-based simulation platforms and the collaboration with the other partners of the project.

 

Exascale computing

Under the Severo Ochoa programme, the BSC will carry out multidisciplinary research to address the complex challenges in the path towards Exascale computing, co-developing energy efficient and high performance hardware and software platforms with applications in personalised medicine, modelling of human organs, and global models for climate change and air quality prediction. Within this context the Junior researcher will support scientific development of the NMMB/BSC-CTM multiscale model, with the aim to improve the understanding of the physico-chemical interaction processes that directly impacts on weather, air quality and climate through numerical modelling techniques. PostDoc - Complex networks - 3 vacancies

Three post-doctoral research associate positions (1+1 years) are available at the University of Barcelona (Spain), to work on the field of complex networks/ network science. We are looking for strongly motivated candidates with excellent skills in theoretical modeling, programming/simulation, data collection and analysis, and a keen interest in multidisciplinary research. The candidate should have a PhD in Physics, Applied Mathematics, Computational Science, or any closely related discipline. Proficiency in spoken and written English is required. The successful candidate will undertake the development of analytic and computational tools for the study of multilayer networks, including time dependence, dynamical processes, and underlying metric spaces.

INSTRUCT is the European Strategic Initiative in the area of Structural Biology (www.instruct-fp7.eu). It is organized around 5 Core Centers and a similar number of Centers. During 2009 the Biocomputing Unit (BCU) of the CNB-CSIC won the international competition to become the "INSTRUCT Center for Image Processing in Biology", starting its operation during 2010 and providing the context for this opening of positions. The BCU is well known in the area of three dimensional electron microscopy, with over 150 publications in the area, including public domains suites of programs and very popular image processing methods. Technologies for 3D cloud

Description:

 

The research program aims to analyze and develop technologies able to support the creation of Cloud computing Infrastructures that allow user to get take advantage of interactive 3D "legacy" applications provided by the model SaaS (Software as a Service). These applications are basically visualization tools, CAD software, 3D interactive applications, and so on. The research program activities will be therefore related to design and develop enabling and integrated technologies able to extend the Cloud Computing paradigm to efficiently support and host interactive 3D applications (3D cloud). In particular, the program will be focused on three main topics:

 

(i) technologies for virtualization and sharing of hardware graphics resources (GPUs),

(ii) remote visualization of 3D applications

(iii) management of interactive 3D sessions.
