Payload Engineer

Payload Engineer in the Payload Technologies and Products Section, Technologies and Products Division, Telecommunications Technologies, Products and Systems Department, Directorate of Telecommunications and Integrated Applications.
 
Duties:

Under the responsibility of the Payload Technologies and Products Section, the incumbent will be responsible for the management of telecommunication satellite payload technology and product development activities within the framework of the ARTES 3-4 and 5.2 programmes and the implementation of the ARTES 5.1 programme, including:

• initiation, in collaboration with the Procurement Department and other relevant Departments of ESA, of activities related to payload technology and product development for telecommunication satellites;

• establishment and control of relevant ESA requirements, specifications and general documentation;

• negotiation, monitoring and control of contracts and activities related to payload technology and product development;

• preparation of inputs to status reports;

• identification and definition of the payload product and technology needs for future satellite communication services;

• cooperation with specialists in the other ESA departments.
 
Qualifications:

Applicants for this post should have a university degree or equivalent qualification in engineering and experience in telecommunication satellite design and manufacturing. In particular, substantial experience is required in the following fields:

• design and development of active RF payload equipment;

• management of development contracts for satellite payload equipment.

Candidates should demonstrate experience in the design, development and/or exploitation of active RF units, such as low noise amplifiers, channel amplifiers and linearisers, power amplifiers, frequency converters and digital signal processors. A sound knowledge of multiple different types of active payload equipment and their functions at payload level would be an asset. A good working knowledge of passive RF equipment, including antennas, is desirable, as well as experience in the design and analysis of telecommunication satellite payloads. Candidates are expected to demonstrate excellent organisation skills, attention to detail, resourcefulness and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships, as well as having demonstrated managerial capabilities. The working languages of the Agency are English and French. A good knowledge of one of these two languages is required. Knowledge of another member state language is an asset.
