Objective:
An exciting opportunity to work at ESAC, supporting, maintaining and testing systems for the Gaia mission.
Service tasks include:
Further test and scale SOC products such as MDB
Participate in the optimisation of software processing
Gather operational constraints for software running at SOC
Contribute to procedure writing and the implementation of those procedures
Assist in automation of SOC procedures (nominally Gaia SOC will only be manned normal working hours)
Proactively fix issues as they arise (requires Java knowledge)
Interact appropriately with and support the algorithm providers
Contribute to the maintenance of the overall system, including configuration control and versioning
Provide support for testing, particularly for End-to-End (E2E) and operational rehearsal campaigns
Finally support and maintain the system into operations (2013-2018)
The selected person must be willing to work in a team environment and to travel
Qualifications / Experience:
University degree or equivalent in computer science or related fields
Basic educational or work-acquired knowledge of astronomy/physics and standard numerical methods and techniques would be a strong asset
Scientific background is a strong advantage
The candidate should have a good grasp of ECSS standards and be aware of required documentation for a large project
The chosen language for the Gaia Core processing is Java. The position requires strong Java skills and operational experience.

In addition knowledge of the following would be beneficial:
LaTeX
C/C++

Experience working with large data volumes, ICDs, data dictionaries would be an asset
Experience of messaging based systems would be an advantage
Essential Skills:
Experience interacting with the science community would be an advantage. The ability to analyse problems and provide solutions efficiently in a busy environment while adhering to formal procedures, and to be proactive, are important assets. The incumbent should be comfortable in an international working environment and be fluent in English, one of the official languages of ESA. Good interpersonal and communication skills.
