Catalonia Institute for Energy Research - IREC
Barcelona, Spain

Description

The Functional Nanomaterials Group of the Catalonia Institute for Energy Research - IREC announces a 3-year PhD Position available for a highly motivated candidate to work in the FP7 UNION Project. The UNION project will develop nanoparticle assembly techniques, and assembly monitoring technologies to prepare novel hierarchically-ordered nanoparticles clusters (NPs). In particular, the project will investigate how emergent properties of the assemblies are determined by the architecture of the assembly, the extent of order, and the properties of the component NPs. This will enable tuning of the primary NP properties and the assembly processes to develop significant breakthroughs in nano-devices and next generation complex nanotechnology products. The candidate will carry out a multidisciplinary activity with the final aim to produce nanocomposites from the bottom-up assembly of colloidal nanoparticles and test their functionality.

PhD - Solid state physics

University of Luxembourg
Luxembourg

Description

There are 2 open PhD positions in the Theoretical Solid-State Physics group of the Physics and Material Sciences Research Unit at the University of Luxembourg. You will work in an exciting international environment and participate in the development of a young, research-oriented university, established in 2003, that has been successfully expanding in recent years. In the group we use firstprinciples methods to understand and predict the properties of novel functional materials starting from the electronic phenomena at the atomic scale. The work will be performed under the supervision of Prof. Ludger Wirtz in collaboration with experimental and other theoretical groups in Europe.

The topic of the first position is the calculation of luminescence spectra of semiconductors and insulators in the presence of defects. The work involves the use and development of the methods of many-body perturbation theory in solid-state physics. In parallel, the use of quantum-chemistry (wavefunction) methods in connection with the development of smart embedding schemes can be envisaged. The work will be in collaboration with the Laboratory for Photovoltaics (Prof. S. Siebentritt) at the University of Luxembourg.

PhD - Magnetic nanoparticles

Institute of Chemical Research
Tarragona, Spain

2 PhD positions at the Institute of Chemical Research

PhD position 1 (Ref. MC-ITN-1)
Project: Functional monomers for catalytic magnetic nanoparticles with improved performance
Description: In the course of this work a reduced group of privileged ligand/catalyst structures will be selected, and their molecules will be chemically modified to introduce in convenient, remote positions additional functional groups for supporting purposes. These modified ligands/catalysts will be then supported on coated (graphene, silica, polymer) magnetic nanoparticles using functionality-adapted strategies (CuAAC, thiol-ene, etc.) with the aim of determining optimal supporting strategies for every catalyst and coating type. Nanoparticles with optimized catalytic activity, enantioselectivity, and life cycle will be explored for the implementation of continuous flow processes.

PhD position 2 (Ref. MC-ITN-2)
Project: Controlled multifunctionalization of magnetic nanoparticles.
Description: This project aims at the development of smart catalytic systems placing in an appropriate spatial distribution on a single solid support (a coated magnetic nanoparticle) different catalytic molecules or the key elements involved in substrate recognition and activation in reference natural enzymes. Work towards the achievement of these objectives builds on the following hypotheses derived from observations/findings in our recent research: a) It should be possible to control the proportion and even the spatial distribution of different monomers on a single platform (either a polymer particle or an inorganic nanoparticle) by using click chemistry as the supporting strategy, and b) The 1,2,3-triazole moieties, conceived as mere linkers in click strategies, are also able to act as donor ligands towards metals and as hydrogen bond acceptors in front of rather acidic substances.

PostDoc - Thermal transport in the nanoscale

Barcelona Adds Value
Barcelona, Spain

Description

Understanding of heat transfer in the nano-scale is crucial for advances in nanoelectronics and one example is provided by Phase Change Memories. In this family of devices thermal effects are highly localised and non-linear, thus, a necessary step for progress is the revision of the concept of temperature to describe local energy in non-equilibrium. This is the core of the European project MERGING in which the Phononic and Photonic Nanostructures Group (http://www.icn.cat/~p2n/) has a role mostly in experimental research. The project partners are Universities, research organisations and one industrial partner.

The responsibilities associated with the position include:

(i) Perform research of the highest standards in thermal transport in the nanoscale;
(ii) Responsibility for the day-to-day research in the project MERGING leading to meeting the scientific project aims and the contractual research and reporting commitment;
(iii) Active participation in the dynamics of the P2N group concerning scientific and technical discussions, implementation of research plans, contribution to laboratory development and
(iv) Dissemination of the project results in high impact journals.
