PhD position 1 (Ref. MC-ITN-1)
Project: Functional monomers for catalytic magnetic nanoparticles with improved performance
Description: In the course of this work a reduced group of privileged ligand/catalyst structures will be selected, and their molecules will be chemically modified to introduce in convenient, remote positions additional functional groups for supporting purposes. These modified ligands/catalysts will be then supported on coated (graphene, silica, polymer) magnetic nanoparticles using functionality-adapted strategies (CuAAC, thiol-ene, etc.) with the aim of determining optimal supporting strategies for every catalyst and coating type. Nanoparticles with optimized catalytic activity, enantioselectivity, and life cycle will be explored for the implementation of continuous flow processes.
PhD position 2 (Ref. MC-ITN-2)
Project: Controlled multifunctionalization of magnetic nanoparticles.
Description: This project aims at the development of smart catalytic systems placing in an appropriate spatial distribution on a single solid support (a coated magnetic nanoparticle) different catalytic molecules or the key elements involved in substrate recognition and activation in reference natural enzymes. Work towards the achievement of these objectives builds on the following hypotheses derived from observations/findings in our recent research: a) It should be possible to control the proportion and even the spatial distribution of different monomers on a single platform (either a polymer particle or an inorganic nanoparticle) by using click chemistry as the supporting strategy, and b) The 1,2,3-triazole moieties, conceived as mere linkers in click strategies, are also able to act as donor ligands towards metals and as hydrogen bond acceptors in front of rather acidic substances.
