PhD - Quantitative behavioural neuroscience

Centro de Regulación Genómica
Barcelona, Spain

Description

We are looking for a highly motivated researcher interested in quantitative behavioural neuroscience. One position is available to conduct a Ph.D. in the laboratory of Dr. Matthieu Louis (CRG, Barcelona, Spain). The successful candidate will join the Marie-Curie Initial Training Network FLiACT for Drosophila system neuroscience. The aim of FLiACT is to elucidate how circuit-function relationships are genetically encoded and how circuit computation controls behaviour. The FLiACT network is composed of 12 partners across Europe together with the Janelia Farm Research Campus (www.fliact.eu). The main research interest of the Louis lab is to clarify the link between sensory coding, neural circuits and behaviour. We are following a systems approach to understand how odour tracking comes about in terms of neural computation in the Drosophila larva. In previous work, we have established larval chemotaxis as a paradigm to dissect the molecular and cellular bases of sensorimotor integration and decision making in a genetic model organism. We take advantage of optogenetics to create virtual olfactory realities where quantitative models about the mechanisms controlling chemotaxis can be tested and refined.

PostDoc - Stem cell biology

Spanish National Cancer Research Center, CNIO
Madrid, Spain

Description

The Spanish National Cancer Research Center (CNIO) is one of the leading European cancer research centres conducting basic and translational cancer research. Research groups are supported by state-of-the-art Core Units that offer a wide range of services and cutting-edge technologies. The CNIO enjoys an international atmosphere. The working language is English and about one third of its scientists, including group leaders, come from outside Spain. It has established international programmes for PhD students, postdoctoral researchers and post-resident MDs. The Stem Cells & Cancer Group at the CNIO, headed by Prof. Christopher Heeschen, focuses on (cancer) stem cell biology (Hermann et al. Cell Stem Cell. 2007; Mueller et al. Gastroenterology 2009, Gallmeier et al. Stem Cells 2011, Lonardo et al. Cell Stem Cell 2011). The laboratory equipment is state-of-the-art and very well funded by the CNIO, the Spanish Ministry, several European FP7 Programmes and a generous ERC Advanced Investigator Grant.

We are seeking highly motivated and talented scientists to work on (cancer) stem cell biology. Evidence is accumulating for the reactivation of embryonic regulatory networks in these cells and it is now essential to understand thoroughly their regulatory machinery and plasticity. In this context, the microenvironment play an important role as it does not only form a physical barrier protecting the cancer (stem) cells from systemic therapies, but also provides a supportive niche driving self-renewal and invasiveness. We are aiming for a comprehensive understanding of in vivo environment of pancreatic cancer stem cell using state-of-the-art mouse models in combination with advanced intravital microscopy allowing for investigations at single cell resolution in real time. In vivo studies are complemented by in vitro single cell experiments using microfluidics technology and nanowell culture systems.
