PhD - Quantitative behavioural neuroscience

Centro de Regulación Genómica
Barcelona, Spain

Description

We are looking for a highly motivated researcher interested in quantitative behavioural neuroscience. One position is available to conduct a Ph.D. in the laboratory of Dr. Matthieu Louis (CRG, Barcelona, Spain). The successful candidate will join the Marie-Curie Initial Training Network FLiACT for Drosophila system neuroscience. The aim of FLiACT is to elucidate how circuit-function relationships are genetically encoded and how circuit computation controls behaviour. The FLiACT network is composed of 12 partners across Europe together with the Janelia Farm Research Campus (www.fliact.eu). The main research interest of the Louis lab is to clarify the link between sensory coding, neural circuits and behaviour. We are following a systems approach to understand how odour tracking comes about in terms of neural computation in the Drosophila larva. In previous work, we have established larval chemotaxis as a paradigm to dissect the molecular and cellular bases of sensorimotor integration and decision making in a genetic model organism. We take advantage of optogenetics to create virtual olfactory realities where quantitative models about the mechanisms controlling chemotaxis can be tested and refined.

Cognitive Neuroscientist

Basque Center on Cognition Brain and Language
San Sebastián, Spain

Description

The Basque Center on Cognition Brain and Language is offering a postdoctoral position to work on a project financed by the European Research Council that will explore reading skills and neural correlates in bilingual children. The aim of the research project is to identify the changes in neural activity that take place in the course of learning to read in a first (L1) and in a second (L2) language. The project will employ a longitudinal design. Children will be recruited before they learn to read in L1 and in L2, and reading development will be tracked with both cognitive and neuroimaging (MEG/EEG, fMRI, DTI) measures over 24 months. Cohorts will be recruited in several parts of Spain and France to test Basque/Spanish and Basque/French children as well as Spanish and French monolingual children. The postdoctoral fellow will be in charge of coordinating part of the project, working directly with a PhD student and research assistants.

PhD - The role of the innate immune system in neurodegenerative diseases

Department of Cell Biology, University Medical Center Groningen.
Job description:
The successful candidate will examine the role of the innate immune system in neurodegenerative diseases. The student will work with the fruit fly Drosophila Melanogaster. The fruit fly has been successfully used to dissect innate immune signaling, and has tremendously advanced mammalian biology. However, how immune signaling can affect neurodegenerative diseases is not well understood. Here, we will investigate this, using the many available genetic tools in Drosophila, and aim to extend findings to mammalian biology.

Requirements:

MSc in (medical) biology or biomedical sciences
Fluency in English
A strong background in neuroscience, cell biology, and molecular biology is desirable.
