Centro de Regulación Genómica
Barcelona, Spain
Description
We are looking for a highly motivated researcher interested in quantitative behavioural neuroscience. One position is available to conduct a Ph.D. in the laboratory of Dr. Matthieu Louis (CRG, Barcelona, Spain). The successful candidate will join the Marie-Curie Initial Training Network FLiACT for Drosophila system neuroscience. The aim of FLiACT is to elucidate how circuit-function relationships are genetically encoded and how circuit computation controls behaviour. The FLiACT network is composed of 12 partners across Europe together with the Janelia Farm Research Campus (www.fliact.eu). The main research interest of the Louis lab is to clarify the link between sensory coding, neural circuits and behaviour. We are following a systems approach to understand how odour tracking comes about in terms of neural computation in the Drosophila larva. In previous work, we have established larval chemotaxis as a paradigm to dissect the molecular and cellular bases of sensorimotor integration and decision making in a genetic model organism. We take advantage of optogenetics to create virtual olfactory realities where quantitative models about the mechanisms controlling chemotaxis can be tested and refined.
Requirements
- BA/MA degree in neuroscience, biophysics, physics, bioengineering or any related fields. Candidates with a background in systems biology, engineering and computer sciences are encouraged to apply.
- The fellow should have less than 4 years “experience in research” (= less than 4 years after obtaining of diploma that gives access to doctoral studies).
- At the time of appointment (beginning of contract), the fellow should not have resided or carried out his/her main activity (work , studies, etc) in Spain for more than 12 months in the past 3 years. Note however that compulsory national service and/or short stays (holidays) are not taken into account
- English is the official language of the FLiACT network. Fluency in English is thus expected from each fellow.
Desirable skills (preferred but not required):
- Good level of comfort with instrumentation
- Prior experience in scientific programming (C, C++, MATLAB)
- Experience working with insects and/or Drosophila
