Marine Ecologist

The British Antarctic Survey (BAS), part of the Natural Environment Research Council, aims to undertake a world-class programme of scientific research, and to sustain for the UK an active and influential regional presence and a leadership role in Antarctic affairs. We are seeking a researcher able to take a leading role in BAS research on pelagic marine ecology, particularly in the response of zooplankton to variability and change in oceanic ecosystems. The work will consider key oceanic species, such as krill, copepods, salps and pteropods and examine their responses both at individual and population levels to environmental stress. Work will also contribute to the parameterisation of ecosystem processes such as carbon flux and nutrient regeneration. The researcher is expected to have specialist interests in population dynamics, molecular ecology and/or physiological processes.

The research will focus on the analysis of environmental and economic aspects of consumption and production patterns and relevant policy implications. It will also cover the analysis of environmental policies and related regulatory instruments. The successful candidate’s main tasks will consist in the development and use of environmental economic models and in conducting, formulating and coordinating techno-economic studies, the management and monitoring of research tasks, analysis and summary of results and preparation of reports for policy makers. He/she should have an academic and professional background in environmental economics or in applied economics. He/she should have a good overview of the different environmental problems. Candidates should have a good understanding of the relationship between economy, technology, environment and consumption and production patterns as well as societal change and its policy implications. A good knowledge of EU Environmental and Sustainable Development Policies is an asset. Knowledge of quantitative methods and tools such as environmental economic models, environmentally extended input output analysis or environmental accounts is required. PostDoc - The Economics of Soil Biodiversity and Ecosystem

The Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3), offers a two year postdoctoral fellowship as part of the EU project EcoFINDERS (Ecological Function and Biodiversity Indicators in European Soils). The postdoc will contribute to a large interdisciplinary team but will focus on the economic analysis associated with the conservation of soil biodiversity and impacts on ecosystem services.  It is expected that the successful candidate will join BC3 in November 2012.

 

BC3 is looking for a postdoctoral researcher with a PhD in natural resource economics, agricultural or environmental economics and strong skills in quantitative economic analysis. The successful applicant will work on developing integrated ecological-economic models to demonstrating the value of soil biodiversity and associated ecosystem services for human wellbeing especially in risky and rapidly changing agricultural environments. Given the role of soil biodiversity for buffering climate change impacts, BC3 is strengthening this area of applied economics research. The postdoctoral researcher will collaborate closely with the Danish Centre for Environment and Energy (DCE) at Aarhus University, Denmark.

Gardline Environmental Limited (GEL) is a member of the Gardline Marine Sciences Limited Group of Companies and is a successful Environmental contractor conducting major integrated offshore projects on a worldwide basis and inshore projects for major clients in the UK and overseas.

 

As a Field Environmental Scientist you will undertake environmental survey activities in a variety of locations across the world, upon a variety of different vessels. You will be involved with setting up and running marine environmental survey requirements within a specific contract, liaising closely with colleagues in technical, scientific and project management departments. This role also involves office work. On a vessel you will be responsible for operating equipment safely and correctly, to collect environmental samples from the water column and the seabed for onshore laboratory analysis without disturbing, damaging or contaminating samples in any way. There are strict protocols set that must be followed to ensure sample integrity is maintained, this includes their storage on board, despatch and recording onto log sheets. As and when required by the Party Chief, whilst offshore, you will be asked to undertake other duties such as equipment maintenance and marine mammal observations. In the office, you will be expected to process the data, working closely with the specialist Environmental reporting team to produce quality reports for our customers. You will also be involved with the processing of samples in our laboratory. Initially this role will be office based in Great Yarmouth, whilst you complete required training and familiarisation with Gardline protocols, so relocation to the area may be required. You will spend up to 120 days at sea during your first year. Alternative contracts may become available after this period in accordance with business needs.

The successful applicant will investigate in a DFG funded project the impact of climatic factors on large mammal communities and their ecosystem services, in particular tourism, at the community, landscape and macroecological scale. Duties and responsibilities

 

The selected candidate will lead a research team focusing on the understanding of the physiological mechanisms underlying plant mediated exchange processes. A specific emphasis is set on related scale dependency processes from leave to ecosystem levels. The selected candidate has expertise in remote sensing (especially fluorescence, hyperspectral and/or thermal techniques) as well as in gas-exchange and flux measurements to scale and quantify the spatio-temporal variations of plant mediated exchange processes. She/he will work at the interface between plant ecophysiology and remote sensing. The selected candidate will have to develop and maintain a nationally and internationally recognized innovative and interdisciplinary research program. The research activity must be balanced between basic and applied research and must attract external funding (e.g. FP7, ESA). The selected candidate will exploit the potential for interdisciplinary research to improve our understanding of ecosystem processes at different scales, both through in-house competencies in remote sensing, hydrology, climatology, biology, agronomy and pedology, as well as through external partner institutions. Providing leadership to direct research and mentoring graduate students is essential.

 

Conservation Scientist - Seabird and Climate Change

An opportunity has arisen for an experienced ecological modeller to join RSPB's growing marine research team, to investigate the effects of oceanographic change on marine food webs and seabirds in the UK. The successful candidate will be responsible for collating data from a variety of open-access sources, to develop spatially-explicit models relating physical oceanographic features to a variety of marine taxa, including seabirds, across several trophic levels. As part of a team of scientists collectively working on a range of marine conservation issues, the post-holder will also be expected to contribute expertise to a number of other projects. Applicants must hold a PhD or equivalent in ecology or statistics, have considerable experience in ecological modelling, and an interest in marine conservation. They must also have a strong track-record of scientific publication, and an ability to communicate project results in a variety of formats to a wide range of audiences, including non-scientist colleagues and the media. The post is initially for a period of 12 months, but it is expected that the post-holder will pursue further sources of funding to extend the duration and scope of the project.
