PostDoc - Theoretical Study of Evolutionary Systems

This is a position jointly offered by the Group of Evolutionary Systems at Centro de Astrobiología in Madrid (Dr. Susanna C. Manrubia) and by the Mathematics Department of Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (Prof. José A. Cuesta). The candidate will be hired by Universidad Carlos III de Madrid. We seek a postdoctoral researcher with a background in Physics or Mathematics and with experience or strong motivation in the study of biological problems, mainly in the framework of evolution. We will value previous experience in or knowledge of statistical mechanics, theoretical modeling, complex systems, networks, population dynamics, quasispecies, and any other skill useful to develop the project. Spoken and written English at a proficiency level is required. The successful candidate will work in the theoretical and computational characterization of evolving populations. A main goal of the project is to advance in the understanding of how neutral networks affect adaptation and evolution. A detailed knowledge of realistic genotype-phenotype maps has major implications in the patters observed in phylogenetic trees, which will be the principal test to theories. The model system can be RNA (sequence and folding) or other populations where the genotype-phenotype map can be made explicit. Some reference works are RNA 15, 743 (2009), BMC Evolutionary Biology 10, 46 (2010); ARBOR 746, 1051 (2010); Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 028104 (2011).

PhD - Analysis of heterogeneous data

The research is funded by SELEX Gallileo, UK (www.selexgalileo.com ) and will be conducted in joint collaboration with the industrial sponsor. The project is part of a Centre of Excellence comprising SELEX Galileo and 5 UK universities. The aim is of this studentship is to address both theoretical and application in extracting knowledge from a large amount of heterogeneous data, e.g. optical, infrared, Synthetic Aperture Radar images and burst illumination laser. The main focus will be on patterns matching and statistical data mining methods. 
 
Methodology:
 
Bayesian distributed data fusion methods and probabilistic graphical models (such as Bayesian networks, tree types of models), nonparametric inference methods will be studied. One approach that will be investigated is based on hierarchical Dirichlet models, and the impact of the prior on the decision making process, nonparametric models for inference and fusion. Nonparametric methods are a class of methods that allow the data to determine the complexity of the model. This prior knowledge will afford to account for prior information in an efficient way. Data of various types will be considered, such as from the airborne sensors, and ground sensors. The reliability metrics will include (but are not limited to) accuracy, computational time and minimum communications. Performance studies will be conducted between centralised, distributed and hybrid architectures. Some of the challenges that will be considered are: fusion of high dimensional data, both on-line and off-line, asynchronous arrival of the data, detection of faults and abilities to cope with missing or rare data, followed by an inference. In case of faults the sensor network should be reconfigured in a way to cope with the missing data and faults. Then the information extracted from the data is meant to be provided to the Unmanned Aerial Vehicles or operators for achieving better situation awareness. The results from the fusion algorithms will be used for recognition and classification of stealthy objects.

Cetemmsa has a first-class team of scientists, engineers, technologists, post docs, and visiting researchers focused on the research in printed electronics. Cetemmsa Technology Centre is seeking for candidates with a Ph. D. degree and expertise in advanced signal processing for sensor systems. The position emphasizes strong knowledge on system modeling and characterization, artificial intelligence techniques including neural networks and decision trees and non linear filter design. The tasks of the candidate include characterization and modeling of a network of printed strain sensors with non-linear behavior for the application of biomechanical motion capture. The successful candidate will be part of a multidisciplinary team of engineers and scientist in the fields of electronics, computer science, chemistry and physics. Applying candidates shall have experience in experimental design, scientific report publishing and participation in patenting processes.

Requirements:

 - Thorough knowledge of advanced signal processing techniques (statistical analysis, data mining, neural networks, fuzzy logic).
 - Experience with design of signal acquisition and processing.
 - Knowledge of experimental design.
 - Thorough knowledge of programming languages and programmable electronics: microcontrollers, DSPs, FPGAs, etc.
 - Knowledge of communication buses and wireless communication protocols.
 - Good publication record in relevant research area.
 - Knowledge of analog and digital electronic circuits design.
 - Knowledge of power electronics.
 - Knowledge of computer aided tools for electronic and mechanical design.
 - Experience with electronic circuits fabrication and prototyping.

PhD - Image processing for enhanced cinematography

PhD Scholarship for research in visual quality metrics

At the Department of Information and Communication Technologies, Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona, Spain, there is a PhD scholarship available for research on visual quality metrics. This position is associated with the ERC Starting Grant "Image processing for enhanced cinematography”, led by Marcelo Bertalmío, http://www.dtic.upf.edu/~mbertalmio/, and which is described below. The scholarship covers tuition fees, does not require teaching, and the monthly wage is 1,300€. The admission requirements are: to have completed 300 ECTS credits, 60 of which have to correspond to an official, research-oriented Master's program.

Scholarships and admission are very competitive, and a strong background in math, image processing, computer vision, neuroscience or related disciplines are a plus.
