Description:
The British Antarctic Survey (BAS), part of the Natural Environment Research Council, aims to undertake a world-class programme of scientific research, and to sustain for the UK an active and influential regional presence and a leadership role in Antarctic affairs. You will play a central role in a new NERC-funded project which aims to understand the deglaciation of the Ronne-Filchner ice-shelf area over the past few thousand years. Data from this area are very sparse, and you will be joining a team developing a new dating technique that exploits radar-echo sounding of remnant ice-islands (“ice-rises”) in the area. In two lengthy field seasons you will deploy two radars, bringing back data describing the internal architecture and internal flow characteristics of the ice. Using these data, you will use state-of-the-art in-house ice-sheet modelling codes to date the ice-flow changes and understand the evolution of ice-rises. You will also play the major role in field-work preparations, write papers and make presentations.
Qualifications:
PhD (or near to completion) in a physical science, mathematics or an earth science
Duration:
34 months fixed term appointment
Salary:
Salary will be in the range of £26,180 to £29,410 per annum. We offer a generous benefits package including a final salary pension scheme, free car parking, flexible working hours and 30 days annual leave. You will be required to do two 11-week field seasons in Antarctica; during time in Antarctica, you will receive a taxable allowance of £85/day in addition to your regular salary.
