PhD or PostDoc - Optical images of volcanic and non-volcanic activity

German Research Centre for Geosciences
PostDam, Germany

Description

The Helmholtz Centre Potsdam GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences is the national Research Centre for Geosciences in Germany and a member of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres. Within the Volcanology Working Group, Department 2 "Physics of the Earth", Section 2.1, invites applications for a PhD or Post-Doc position (m/f) (Job Vacancy No. 24/2/13 D) to investigate optical images of volcanic and non-volcanic activity. The subject is part of FUTUREVOLC, a European Collaborative Project, dedicated to develop and apply a monitoring system and network for the future, and to increase scientific understanding of magmatic processes. The PhD candidate will work on modern time-lapse cameras that are to be installed at active volcanoes and innovative image analyzing methods. Digital image cross correlation and particle image velocimetry algorithms are to be improved and applied for sites located in Iceland and elsewhere. Geoscientific aim is to analyze near vent characteristics such as degassing activity, thermal images and displacements using time-lapse camera data streams, and to automate the procedure of data processing for natural hazard and early warning strategies. Close collaboration with international partners is expected.

Requirements

- Master of Sciences or equivalent in Photogrammetry, Geoinformatics, Geophysics, Geodesy, Geology, Engineering Sciences, or Physics
- Strong mathematical and programming background (Fortran, Matlab, or C/C++)
- Experience in photogrammetry is of advantage
- Willingness to work in an international and interdisciplinary environment and to travel to collaboration partners
