PostDoc - Instrument Development: EMIR

Description
 
The Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC, Tenerife, Spain) invites applications for one post-doctoral contract in Astrophysics within the framework of the grants entitled “EMIR: Verification, commissioning and first light” (AYA2012-33211,
http://www.iac.es/proyecto/emir/), whose Principal Investigator is Dr. Francisco Garzón López, and “ALBA: The sources responsible for the re-ionization of the Universe” (AYA2012-39168), whose P.I. is Dr. Jose M. Rodríguez Espinosa. The IAC is one of the leading research centres in Spain, covering theoretical and observational research and instrumentation across most areas of Astrophysics. It has been selected as a  “Severo Ochoa Center of Excellence” in research by the Spanish Government. The successful candidate will have access to all telescopic and supercomputing facilities in the Canary Islands, including the 10.4m GTC. Ample travel funding is available.
 
Requirements
 
The candidate must be a doctor in astrophysics with a solid background in the research of astronomical fields of interest for EMIR.  Especially valued is experience in technical tasks which can be applied to the verification and commissioning of EMIR, on scientific programming, as well as on the observation, processing and calibration of NIR data. Likewise expertise in dealing with deep astronomical images, error analysis, faint source detection, etc. will be required. The tasks for this position are related to the organization, coordination and execution of the instrument characterization in laboratory at system level, as well as the subsequent commissioning at the telescope. Proven experience in the development and calibration of instruments is required.  Proven expertise in dealing with deep images and large surveys is also a must.
