PhD - Drugs and metabolites

Research Institute for Pesticides and Water, University Jaume I
Castellón, Spain

Description

A fully funded Marie Curie Early Career Researcher position is offered for a fixed term of three years to undertake research on drugs and metabolites in sewage water and surface water using advanced analytical techniques. The appointee would register for a PhD degree. This position is part of the European Marie Curie ‘SEWPROF’ Initial Training Network (ITN). SEWPROF’s main objective is to provide an integrated approach towards public health monitoring at a community level based on innovative sewage epidemiology techniques. The approach will deliver real-time profiling of community-wide health and lifestyle through the analysis of human biomarkers in wastewater using a wide-range of methods including hyphenated mass spectrometry techniques, bioanalytical techniques and real-time sensing. The project will involve the development of advanced analytical methodologies for the detection and identification of a wide range of drugs and metabolites in water. The successful candidate will explore the potential of time-of-flight mass spectrometry (TOF MS) with the complementary use of gas- and liquid-chromatography for rapid screening of compounds and for the identification and elucidation of transformation products (TPs) that can be relevant for monitoring water quality. Degradation studies in surface end sewage water will be performed in order to identify the main TPs of selected drugs. Subsequently multi-class quantitative methods based on liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry need to be developed. This project requires close collaboration with other prestigious research groups within the network.

Requirements

The candidate should have a good degree in a relevant discipline related to chemistry, analytical or environmental science. It is expected that the successful applicant would register for a PhD degree at the University of Jaume I, and will undertake research at more than one institution and be exposed to more than one research environment and working culture including public and private research institutions. Researchers can be of any nationality. They are required to undertake trans-national mobility (i.e. move from one country to another) when taking up their appointment. At the time of recruitment by the host organisation, researchers must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc) in the country of their host organisation for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the reference date.
