Description
Coastal Carolina University is seeking a Director for our Environmental Quality Laboratory (EQL). This is a full-time annual appointment position with benefits and faculty status in the School of Coastal and Marine Systems Science, which offers masters and PhD degrees. The EQL is a nonprofit facility that engages in and supports education, research, and community service. The EQL director collaborates in the development and execution of monitoring and research projects. The EQL is certified by the state of SC for analysis of various water quality parameters. Ongoing projects include: (1) monitoring programs in riverine, ground and coastal waters using wet chemistries and continuous in-situ sensors, (2) microbial source tracking using qPCR assays and chemical tracers, such as caffeine and optical brighteners, and (3) performance assessments of ecosystem restoration efforts and stormwater best management practices. Tasks to carry out includes supervision and training laboratory technicians and student interns in lab and field work. Maintain current laboratory certifications and obtain new certifications to support expansion of laboratory programs. Oversee the laboratory safety program. Manage project budgets. Oversee method development. Troubleshoot problems with analytical equipment, test procedures, and sampling design. Develop new projects and proposals in collaboration with other faculty. Author reports, peer-reviewed publications and presentations based on laboratory results. Train graduate and undergraduate research students and supervise their projects.
PhD in Marine, Environmental, or Analytical Chemistry preferred. Significant professional experience with: (1) USEPA QA/QC procedures in a certified lab including development of SOPs and QAPPs, (2) management of laboratory staff, (3) field sampling in fresh and marine waters, and (4) data management and analysis using databases and statistical software packages preferred. Experience with LIMS, trace metals and organic compound analysis a plus. Must also maintain a valid SC driver's license. Duties require excellent time management and organizational skills. Must be able to stand for long periods of time, move and/or lift boxes and containers weighing up to 30 pounds. Must be able to differentiate colors on bacterial plates. Must participate in occasional overnight travel and work after hours and weekends.
