PostDoc - Medium Scale Structure of the Universe

INAF-Osservatorio Astronomico di Trieste
Trieste, Italy
Application deadline: 20/01/2014

Description

Project: "The Medium Scale Structure of the Universe"
The main goals of the project are as follows:

  • Large, Medium, and Small Scale structure of the Universe;
  • Measure of cosmological parameters in standard and non-standard scenarios;
  • Modelling of the Inter Galactic Medium.

The above goals will be achieved through systematic comparison between observational data and results of N-body simulations and/or semi-analytical models of the large scale structure as e.g. extensions of the linear theory. The successful applicant will work in close collaboration with dr. Matteo Viel and with other members of the Cosmology group of the Astronomical Observatory of Trieste in the framework of the project CosmoIGM granted by the EU. The members of the CosmoIGM group are highly active in the field of Intergalactic physics (the projects are: SDSS/BOSS, UVES and X-Shooter), of cosmological neutrinos and standard and non-standard models of the large scale structure.

Requirements

Participation to the selection is reserved for Italian and foreign citizens holding the following mandatory minimum requirements:
- PhD degree either in Physics or Astronomy, or equivalent degree, issued by an Italian (or foreign) Advanced Studies Institute or University.
 Or
- degree either in Physics or Astronomy issued according to the previous Italian University regulations or degree in Physics or Astronomy, either “specialistica” or “magistralis” (new Italian University regulations), or equivalent degree issued by an Italian or foreign Advanced Studies Institute or University, together with at least three years of documented experience in scientific or technological activities.
A good level of knowledge of the English language is required.

More information and applications

The selection is based on qualifications possibly integrated by an interview. To be admitted to the interview, candidates must exhibit their identity documents.
The total ranking score established by the Selection Committee is 100 points, of which 70/100 is the maximum score for qualifications and 30/100 is the maximum score for the interview. Evaluation criteria will be defined in advance, and qualifications will be evaluated before the possible interview. Scientific qualifications and research activities are ranked as follows:
• University Degree thesis and PhD thesis: up to 20 points;
 • Research and technological activity (inclusive of tasks/positions and participation to projects) both at public and/or private institutions: up to 25 points;
 • Publications on international journals related to the proposed research subject: up to 25 points.
 The Selection Committee shall rank eligible applicants to be interviewed.
Applicants selected for the interview will be summoned with 15 days’ notice by registered letter with acknowledgement of receipt.
