Consortium CELLS
Barcelona, Spain
Description
ALBA, the largest scientific facility in Spain, is a synchrotron radiation facility operated by the
Consortium CELLS, which is equally funded by the Spanish Government (Ministerio de Economía y
Competividad) and the Catalan Government (Departament d'Economia i Coneixement). ALBA consists of a
complex of electron accelerators that generate brilliant X-ray photon beams. Out of the seven
beamlines that exploit the X-ray beams, BL04-MSPD is the beamline dedicated to high angular
resolution as well as time-resolved powder diffraction. The beamline has a second endstation (focused
beam) suited for high-pressure/microdiffraction powder diffraction studies.
The successful candidate will join an existing team of two scientists and one postdoc. Beside running
his/her own research program, he/she will assist external users during their experiments on either of
both stations and will be involved in instrumental developments of the beamline.
Requirements
First of all, the successfull candidate is expected to run his/her own research program during the duration of his/her stay at ALBA. The applicants will be hence evaluated based on the proposed in-house research project which has to be compliant with the MSPD instrumentation as well as on his/her CV. A clear description of the proposed in-house project in the motivation letter is therefore required. The limit for the
in-house research project description is three pages.
- The applicant must have a doctorate in Chemistry, Physics, Material Science, or related
disciplines.
- Previous experience in running powder diffraction experiments at Large Scale user facilities.
- Ability to propose and conduct an independent research program using the MSPD instrumentation.
- A good level of English both written and spoken is a must. The working language at ALBA is
English.
- Good interpersonal skills and capabilities to work in a group, as well as to work independently.
It will be also valuable:
- Sound practice of commonly used Powder Diffraction softwares (Rietveld refinement, data
reduction from 2D detector, ab-initio structure determination, total scattering,...).
- Experience or knowledge of sample environment.
- Knowledge of programming languages.
