PostDoc - Non-crystalline Diffraction Beamline

ALBA synchrotron radiation facility
Barcelona, Spain

Description

ALBA, the largest scientific facility in Spain, is a synchrotron radiation facility operated by the Consortium CELLS, which is equally funded by the Spanish Government (Ministerio de Economía y Competividad) and the Catalan Government (Departament d'Economia i Coneixement). ALBA consists of a complex of electron accelerators that generate brilliant X-ray photon beams. Out of the seven beamlines that exploit the X-ray beams, BL11-NCD is the only one dedicated to Small Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS) and Wide Angle X-ray Scattering (WAXS) to study biological, soft condensed matter and material science samples.
The Spanish Nuclear Safety Council (CSN, www.csn.es) is in charge to protect the workers, the public and the environment against the harmful effects of ionizing radiation, such as X rays. The CSN, in the framework of its research program on the effects of ionizing radiation, has signed an agreement with ALBA Synchrotron. Within the frame of this agreement, a postdoctoral position at NCD beamline is open. The susccessful candidate will join the NCD beamline team. The susccessful candidate will study the radiation damage induced by the synchrotron radiation on biological samples when SAXS experiments are carried out. The candidate will also participate in the activities of the beamline:

- Participate in the public and industrial user support, including data analysis and training.
- To carry out in-house research activities with SAXS and WAXS techniques.
- Beamline upgrade, commissioning and testing of new equipment and software
- Maintenance of the beamline equipment during operations.

Requirements

- The applicant must have a doctorate in Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Material Science, Physics, or related disciplines
- Experience in Small Angle X-Ray Scattering (SAXS) and Wide Angle X-Ray Scattering (WAXS), at least at user level
- Experience in radiation damage
- A good level of English both written and spoken. The working language at ALBA is English.
- Good interpersonal skills and capabilities to work in a group, as well as to work independently.

Desirable:
