Nommon Solutions and Technologies, S.L.
Madrid, Spain
Description
Nommon provides decision support tools and consulting services for the design, optimisation, and management ofsystems whose behaviour emerges from the complex interaction of policies, social trends, technologies, and market conditions. We are particularly active in the field of urban systems, helping cities face the challenge of improving competitiveness while achieving social cohesion and environmental sustainability. The concept of the ‘smart city’ emerged during the last decade as a fusion of ideas about how ICT might improve the functioning of cities, enhancing their efficiency, improving their competitiveness, and creating sustainable development and high quality of life. The emergence of the smart city concept, together with recent advances in data science and complex systems theory, are opening new opportunities for the development of decision support tools for the planning and management of urban systems. Our research agenda in the field of smart cities encompasses three complementary threads:
- Spatial analysis and Big Data. The increasing penetration of modern ICT, such as smart phones, Internet social networks, or e-transactions, allows the automatic collection of a vast amount of spatio-temporal data. In parallel, in the frame of the open data movement, public administrations are opening up many kinds of different data. We investigate how to merge and analyse these data to extract relevant information about urban dynamics.
- Modelling and simulation of urban systems. New forms of data analysis can in turn contribute to the development of better urban theories and models able to inform policy in areas such as land use and transport planning, labour and housing markets, or smart energy grids. Our work builds on disciplines like network theory or agent-based modelling, and more generally on the holistic view advocated by complexity science.
- Policy interfaces and visualisation tools. We work closely with city authorities and societal actors to investigate how new models and decision support tools can be integrated into governance processes and support new ways of citizens’ engagement in the planning of their cities. Particularly relevant is the role of information visualisation and visual analytics to facilitate the interaction of policy makers and stakeholders with advanced simulation models.
The candidate will join a multidisciplinary team working in smart city projects. His/her main responsibilities will include:
- develop and test methods, algorithms and tools for the integration, management, mining, analysis and visualisation of urban data originated from multiple distributed sources;
- develop agent-based urban simulation models, covering the whole project life cycle: requirements, design, analysis, development, verification, testing, etc.;
- contribute to the development of Nommon computing infrastructure, including the definition, installation and maintenance of systems architecture, development environment, configuration management tools, etc.;
- define software engineering processes and methodologies;
- contribute to the definition of innovative products, services, and business models.
