PhD - The ocean in the Earth System

MARUM – Center for Marine Environmental Sciences
Bremen, Germany

Description

The Research Center/Cluster of Excellence “The Ocean in the Earth System” (MARUM) at the University of Bremen, Germany, has the overarching scientific goal to achieve a better understanding of key processes in the marine environment. The research themes are: Ocean and Climate, Geosphere-Biosphere Interactions and Sediment Dynamics. MARUM is offering a PhD position in the area of organic geochemical analyses of settling particles in the framework of the MARUM project GB1 “Particle flux, carbon turnover and nutrient regeneration”, which focusses on the deciphering of mechanisms and quantifications of processes that control remineralization processes in the water column and surface sediments (cf. www.marum.de/Page13034.html). The main objective of the PhD study will be the use and development of conceptual and numerical models to quantify the importance of environmental changes for benthic carbon and nutrient cycles. The work is ideal for integration in several other projects at MARUM, which contain a broad range of analytical investigations.

Requirements

Candidates should be trained in biogeochemistry and/or aquatic geochemistry and should have obtained an M.Sc. or B.Sc. (honor) degree in earth or natural sciences. Additionally, knowledge of the theoretical concept of reaction-transport modeling (RTM) or experience in the development and application of analytical and/or numerical computer models would be beneficial. Special computer languages are not necessary. Candidates are expected to write scientific texts in English. MARUM offers a strong accompanying and supporting education program (www.marum.de/en/Education.html). Participation in this program is mandatory.
