Beamline scientist for MISTRAL

ALBA Synchrotron Light Facility
Barcelona, Spain

Description

The consortium for Construction, Equipment and Exploitation of the Synchrotron Light Laboratory CELLS) is jointly funded by the Spanish Government and the Catalan Government. The consortium constructs and operates the Synchrotron Light Facility, named ALBA, in the Barcelona area (Vallès Occidental) within the Bellaterra campus. ALBA is a third generation 3 GeV storage ring with seven operating beamlines. This is one of the most exciting research projects currently undertaken in Spain. CELLS offers you a unique opportunity to participate as part of a dynamic team with many possibilities in an great environment. The position is based at the soft X-ray full field microscopy beamline, BL MISTRAL, which is installed in a bending magnet port and is equipped with a VLS plane grating monochromator and mirror focusing optics to the entrance and exit slits. The operational energy range for the moment is the so-called water window. However an upgrade to higher energies for the microscope is planned in the future. The microscope is expected to have a resolution of about 30 nm in 2D. The beamline is strongly devoted to cryo-tomography of biological samples. Other scientific applications such as spectroscopy and magnetic imaging can be done. The scientist will work within the beamline team. His/her main task will be:

- Give support to external users.
- Participate in projects to continuously improve and upgrade the beamline.
- Carry on an “in house” scientific research project.
- Be involved in dedicated data processing software development at the BL.

Requirements

The candidate should have a PhD in Physics, Biology, Materials Science or related disciplines and sound experience in synchrotron radiation instrumentation and X-ray microscopy techniques. Knowledge of tomography reconstruction methods is an asset. In addition, it has to have adaptability to an international and multidisciplinary environment, sense of responsibility and ability to work independently as well as being a member of a team. ALBA working language is English.
