PostDoc - Exploitation of the Planck satellite

Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias
Tenerife, Spain

Description

The IAC invites applications for one postdoctoral contract within the framework of the project entitled “SCIENTIFIC EXPLOITATION OF THE PLANCK SATELLITE AND TUNE-QUIJOTE CMB EXPERIMENT. EUCLID SATELLITE PARTICIPATION”, (AYA2010-21766-C03-02), whose Principal Investigator is Dr. José Alberto Rubiño Martín. Research topics at the IAC include most areas of astrophysics: cosmology and the structure of the Universe, galactic astrophysics, the structure and evolution of stars, the interstellar medium, solar physics, telescope design and construction, high spatial resolution techniques, infrared and optical instrumentation, and astronomical space projects.It has been selected as a “Severo Ochoa Center of Excellence” in research by the Spanish Government. The IAC also leads the scientific teams responsible for the Day One instrument of the 10.4m GTC segmented telescope (http://www.gtc.iac.es), as well as their scientific exploitation. Further information about the IAC's research programme, its Observatories and the GTC is available on the IAC's Web page (http://www.iac.es/).  Tasks:

- To conduct the observations, the data processing and data analysis of optical/IR images and spectroscopy for the study of the new galaxy clusters detected by the Planck satellite;
- To develop specific tools for the identification of new galaxy clusters in optical/IR images: overdensities, color-magnitude, spatial distributions, redshift determinations;
- To apply these tools to the optical/infrared images of the follow-up of new Planck clusters. Also apply these tools to archival data;
- To participate in the Science working groups of the space mission Euclid.

Requirements

The profile of the successful candidate should be that of a doctor in astrophysics with a solid background in observational astronomy, data processing of optical/IR images, and the observational study of galaxies clusters. The following expertise will be highly valued:

- Observational experience with optical/IR telescopes;
- Experience in the processing of optical/IR images and spectroscopy;
- Observational experience in the study of galaxy clusters and/or luminous red galaxies;
- Experience in the use of photometric redshift estimation methods;
- Experience with specific techniques for the detection of galaxy clusters at intermediate high redshift.
- Applicants must have a PhD in Astrophysics or Physics by the application deadline (March 31st ).

NOTE: Applicants who prepared their thesis at the IAC must present written evidence of having spent one continuous year, or 18 accumulated months, in other research institutes.
