Description
UCL/MSSL has a vacancy for a Research Associate funded through the STFC Consolidated Grant for MSSL to join Prof. Jan-Peter Muller’s Imaging Group. The Imaging group is engaged in developing, processing and validating climate quality global datasets of the Earth (including topography, albedo, aerosol, wind and cloud properties), primarily from EO sensors, for inter-comparison with other planets, such as Mars and in the analysis of Sun-planetary connections to planetary climate. Prof. Muller is a CoI on the ESA Mars Express HRSC team, ExoMars PanCam CoI team, and a NASA recognized Collaborator on MSL Curiosity. Prof. Muller has a long history in leading the development of novel techniques for extracting terrain information from stereo imagery, lidar and InSAR. In a previous STFC-funded project, a multi-resolution DTM processing system was developed which permitted co-registered DTMs to be created from 1m to 100m grid-spacing. In this project, it is planned to extend this work to develop automated co-registration techniques such that historical data of the Moon and Mars can be linked to orthorectified images taken over the last ten years to determine changes in the surface due to impact cratering, dust dune motion, frost and ice-cap sublimation and freezing to be investigated. Data mining is a new area focusing on detection of such change automatically and the applicant should have relevant experience in this area. In addition, the applicant would be expected to collaborate with other members of the Imaging group working on machine vision applications to EO and planetary datasets. MSSL is a multi-disciplinary laboratory, with a long track record in the design, build, operation and exploitation of EO, space and astrophysics instrumentation. MSSL was selected by ESA to develop the ExoMars PanCam instrument and has previously been involved in developing the Beagle2 PanCam.
