The Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC, Tenerife, Spain) invites applications for ONE post-doctoral support astronomer (SA) position. The SA Group, under the direct supervision of Dr. Alejandro Oscoz, provides support at several IAC’s telescopes, instruments and experiments, including the IAC’s common user instruments at both, OT and ORM, Observatories, such as LIRIS, INTEGRAL or GHaFaS for the WHT, TIP-II for GREGOR, etc. The SA spend about 8 days per month at the Observatories and the rest of their time at the IAC´s headquarters in La Laguna devoted to support tasks. Up to 30% of their time may be dedicated to personal research.

• Maintaining and tending the quality of the IAC’s Telescopes, Instruments and Experiments at the Canary Islands Observatories.

• Maintaining and tending the quality of the IAC’s Telescopes, Instruments and Experiments at the Canary Islands Observatories.
• Development software to control these instruments, as well as accurate and friendly software for the reduction of the obtained data.
• Carrying out the IAC’s Service Nights granted by the Spanish Time Allocation Committee in both the ORM and the OT.
• Providing support to astronomers using the IAC’s Telescopes, Instruments and Experiments at the Canary Islands Observatories.
• Collaborate with the Sky Quality Group in taking, reducing and analysing the data obtained with the different instruments.
• Calibration of the instruments’ performance during the observation of different objects.
• Observation of standard calibration stars.
• Writing of the user’s manuals, for both non-experienced and experienced users.
• Proposal, development and commissioning of improvements in the instrumentation.
Duration:
The contract will start as soon as possible after the publication of the Resolution by the Director IAC, during the fourth trimester 2012 or the first trimester 2013, with a lasting period of three years, subject to annual review. The gross annual salary is 32.866 € per annum.
