Barcelona Supercomputing Center
Barcelona
Description:
The Computer Architecture / Operating System interface from the Computer Science department at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center searches for a Phd student in the area of the CPU accounting in multicore and multithreaded architecture. Nowadays, the marketing tends to combine different thread level parallelisms to improve the processor performance, but it also introduces complexities in the accounting of CPU utilization of running tasks on multicore/multithreaded processor. The main problem of CPU accounting in MT processors lies on the fact that the performance of a task depends on both the time the task runs and the amount of resources it receives during that time. The latter is in general not under the control of the user or the operating system. The Proartis project involves exploring novel mechanisms to measure the CPU utilization per task for many systems more accurate than current mechanisms, designing and evaluating the mechanism both hardware level and software level, etc..
Requirements:
•Graduate on Computer Science or equivalent
•Capacity to interact and build strong relations with a diverse members/stakeholder/staff base.
•Good knowledge of C/C++, and Java.
•Deep understanding of cpu accounting issues in multicore/SMT architectures
The following skills will also be evaluated:
•Ability to take initiative, prioritize and work under set deadlines and pressure
•Ability to work independently and in a team
Applications:
All applications should contain:
•A presentation letter.
•Your C.V with contact data.
