Description
A position is available at the Institute of Astronomy (West Cambridge), University of Cambridge, to work on the scientific optimisation and exploitation of optical transients which will be discovered by Gaia, and detected and released by the Gaia photometric data processing centre at Cambridge. The Gaia satellite will be launched in autumn 2013, and operate for 5-6 years. Among its many scientific results will be a near real-time transient detection capability, exploiting all of photometry, spectrophotometry, and astrometry. Transient discoveries will include variables of all known astrophysical types - novae, supernovae, AGN, microlensing. and potentially new classes of object. This position will involve enhancement, verification, and subsequent scientific exploitation, of the Gaia alert discoveries, working with the small Gaia Alerts team based in Cambridge. .
Requirements
Experience in transient science, and/or spectroscopic follow-up relevant to gaia discoveries, would be an advantage. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Physics or Astronomy (or be near completion).

The position is available from April 2013, for initially 3 years, but starting date and duration are negotiable. The salary scale will be GBP 27,854 to GBP 36,298 p.a. depending on experience plus superannuation benefits.
