Centre de Recherche Public - Gabriel Lippmann
Luxembourg, Luxembourg
Description
The Centre de Recherche Public - Gabriel Lippmann, a fast growing public establishment for applied scientific research and technology transfer in Luxembourg, has an opening on a fixed-term contract basis (9 to 12-month parental leave replacement) for its internationally recognized “Environment and Agro-biotechnologies” Departement (EVA), for a researcher in wireless satellite based (GNSS) positioning (m/f). In the framework of the FLOODTRACKER project a Nomadic Flood Wave Tracking System (NFWTS) has been designed as a potential solution for increasing the flexibility for hydrometric measurements in specific areas. Floating buoys equipped with dual-frequency Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) sensors have been built for monitoring water level fluctuations in river systems. Based on the data obtained from a network of permanent GNSS stations, a post processing kinematic treatment is applied to the data in order to reduce bias and noise. The experimental buoys are further equipped with IRIDIUM antennas enabling the near real-time transmission of the data. The ultimate objective of this research activity is to assimilate the data into a hydrodynamic model for improved water level predictions. To continue developing the NFWTS we need to increase our understanding of the uncertainties affecting the GNSS-based water level measurements. In this context we plan to continue testing the system in different flow conditions, satellite constellations and river configurations. The buoys will be installed on canoes to record water level fluctuations along different river reaches. The geo-location data will be transmitted via satellite telecommunication. We expect the successful applicant to carry out the in situ measurement campaigns. He/she will be in charge of processing the data and assessing the measurement uncertainty. His/her work will contribute to the development of novel methods for reducing the uncertainties of the GNSS-based data sets. He/she will further collaborate with the hydraulic modellers of the research unit to test different applications of the data collected during the field campaigns.
Requirements
- Applicants should have an MSc or a PhD degree in geosciences or electric/environmental engineering and should have expertise in the application of GNSS.
- Excellent programming skills (e.g. Matlab, IDL,) are necessary and experience with GNSS data processing (post-processing kinematic treatment) is required.
- The candidate will join a multi-disciplinary research team including microwave remote sensing scientists, hydrological and hydraulic modellers, as well as experimental hydrologists. More information on the employer can be found at www.lippmann.lu.
- The candidate must be fluent in English (for scientific communication), French (administrative language) will be considered as an advantage.
