Fundación Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Cardiovasculares
Madrid, Spain
Description
The CNIC, (Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Cardiovasculares), has been created to undertake world-class, internationally competitive research into the origin and treatment of cardiovascular diseases. The research centre is located in Madrid in a new building with over 28.144 square meters of laboratory space and equipped with a comprehensive modern infrastructure. Since the group’s formation in 1995, a large part of our work has centered on the regulation and function of the calcium/CN/NFAT pathway in programs of lymphocyte activation, angiogenesis, inflammation and cardiovascular remodeling. Over recent years, a central line of research in the lab has been related to mechanisms underlying the interaction of CN with NFAT and with other substrates and regulators, and we have clarified essential issues that elucidate the mechanisms by which CN interacts with its substrates, as well as the mechanism by which immunosuppressive drugs inhibit CN. More recently, we have initiated a new line of research analyzing the gene expression program triggered by Ang-II in cardiomyocytes and VSMCs, and the role of the CN pathway in this process. We have recently dissected signaling pathways involved in vascular wall remodeling, a major feature of vascular diseases such as atherosclerosis, aneurysm and restenosis.
