Biomedical Engineer

IDIBAPS
Barcelona, Spain

Description:

The main task will particularly focus in implementing advanced imaging technologies in a rigid endoscope to improve the current state of a patented technology (US 2011/0295062) and evaluate whether it is possible to bring it closer to market. The status of the technology is: (1) two working prototypes, (2) preliminary proofs of concepts of independent technological needs, (3) the need to build a prototype that simultaneously integrates all the technological needs and (4) explore further applications according to an ongoing european project. The candidate will be responsible for organising his/her time and tasks, reporting to direction of the company, work with strategic partners, executive responsibility of the milestones and achievements, outsource specific tasks of the project, work with tissue phantoms and animal models to test the technology, and representing the company in the relations with scientific and commercial partners at the technological level. The position searched will be responsible of building a working prototype to be connected to a commercial endoscope and achieve the transition from preliminary results in tissue phantoms to an effective pre-clinical stage to build and provide sound proofs that the technology can work robustly in a pre-defined surgical context in animals. This will enable to bring the company closer to market and, if successful, the candidate might have the option to go to the next step and go from the pre-clinical stage to clinical stage. The company posses the IP rights of a patented technology (US 2011/0295062, EQUIPMENT FOR INFRARED VISION OF ANATOMICAL STRUCTURES AND SIGNAL PROCESSING METHODS THEREOF) and two prototypes to capture images through an endoscope, contacts with companies that produce tissue phantoms and clinical partners that provide animal models and personel for experimentation. We are expecting a 2-3 year project with high chances of remaining in the company in the long run.

Requirements:

• PhD in photonics, physics, engineering related to biomedical research and animal experimentation.
- Diffuse optics.
• Demonstrated expertise in tissue optics, specifically in the field of spectroscopy.
• Expertise in designing optical experiments with tissues.
• Ability to conduct research independently under supervision of major goals with specific milestones and budgets.
• Good communication skills.
